Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Kandy

4.2
A World Heritage Site, Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic plays home to one of Buddhism's most important relics, the tooth of the Buddha himself. Originally constructed in 1595, the temple played a key role in the nation's history, as local tradition held that the right to rule to country lay with the one who possessed the Buddha relic. You can enter the main hall of the temple and admire its vaulted ceilings and columned hallways adorned with golden statues of elephants, likenesses of the Buddha, and scenes from his life. Though you can't actually see the tooth itself, you'll get a chance to observe the gold casket that encloses it. Afterwards, you can wander the rest of the temple complex and discover its array of shrines, halls, and displays. Plan my trip to Kandy with suggested itineraries provided by Inspirock.

  • in this is the one that is very unique and beautiful in every way. We are here talking about the Temple of Tooth Relic. This temple is very popular and most of the tourists coming to Sri Lanka come here definitely because of its uniqueness. Like many other popular places of Sri Lanka, this too comes in the world heritage sites and is marked so by UNESCO. The temple is spiritual and historical both. So, people come here are interested in both subjects. It is said that the tooth relic that the temple has is of Buddha. Also, there is this saying that one who will hold that tooth relic will be the governor of the kingdom. This temple is located in the city of Kandy.
  • It took over 3 hours by train from Colombo to get to Kandy to visit this place but it is well worth the journey. It is a truly wonderful experience. With hindsight I wish we had hired a guide as I'm sure we didn't fully understand everything. It was very busy with tourists, lots of children on school trips, families and other interesting people visiting this holy place. If you get the chance to visit you will not be disappointed by everything you see.
  • The world renowned temple is the home to the canine tooth of lord buddha. The temple is huge and located in the centre of Kandy. The atmosphere is serene and peaceful. Tourists and visitors are expected to dress respectfully and all foreigners need to buy an entry ticket. Make sure to visit all the complexes around the temple if you’re a tourist buying a ticket. There is a world Buddhist museum and many small but beautiful shrines in the premises.
  • Temple is the most sacred place for Buddhists world over. It's situated near the lake and we'll preserved to provide the due respect for the tooth relic..the temple is well maintained, very quiet inside and attractive. It's calm inside though the place could be very busy with devotees during ritual times. The traditional proceedings happening in the temple is amazing.. There is a museum inside for the Elephant who carried the casket of the tooth relic in traditional procession happening in August every year..Also a Buddhist Museum. There is a entrance fee of about 10 USD.
  • Fascinating cultural and spiritual center. Go in the evening to witness puja ceremony. Foreigners must use machines on the lakeside to buy tickets for 1500 rs -- exact change only (for the total number of tickets purchased). *If you walk through the candle hall in the courtyard you might come out with very oily feet...
