  • A place with a castle and huge garden. Early 19 structure. Remaining Architectural details.Noted Colorful, unique windows & a staircase. Good photographs are still remain. Finally sad ending behinds the story of the castle :(
  • This magnificent mansion was built between 1900-1910 by Padikara Mudali Nanayakkara Rajawasala Appuhamilage Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardana(1889-1947) which resembles one of the mansions of Maharaja's in india. According to the legend, during a Mudaliyar's visit to india to one of Maharaja's mansions, he has conveyed his intentions of building a similar mansion here in Sri Lanka and has requested architectural plans. However, Maharaja has humiliated Mudiliyar discouraging such an attempt to build a similar Mansion, but has granted permission to observe the mansion and duplicate it as a challenge. Returning back from India, Mudaliyar has formed a team of finest carpenters & craftsmen and sent to India to replicate the plans and built the same with similar features as we see the Richmond Castle today. If carefully observed. One could identify many sustainable building concepts adopted throughout the construction. Passive ventilation techniques are very prominent. Also certain walls are constructed with an air gap that acts as a sound/thermal Barrier where such privacy was expected. When looking at the garden from the balcony, another interesting thing one would notice is that all the female statues placed in the garden are facing away from the mansion while the male ones are facing towards the mansion. It is said that Mudaliyar was severely heartbroken since he did not have children by the time and desperately wanted to have a male child. Today the Mansion is owned by the public trustee and operates exclusively as a male children orphanage which was Mudaliyar's Last will.
  • Interesting place to visit
