Coral Sanctuary, Hikkaduwa

1.6
#5 of 9 in Nature in Galle District
Encounter the underwater world at Coral Sanctuary, and admire a reef rich in colorful coral formations. You can explore the water by boat, or snorkel and swim with turtles and vibrant fish. Because of the 2004 tsunami and poor management, some coral and fish in the area have died in recent years. However, the sanctuary still shows plenty of magnificent flowering coral formations, and you can see the turtles year-round. You can rent snorkeling equipment on site, but strong waves mean you should take extra care when swimming and snorkeling around the sharp formations. • Corals in bad condition, a few beautiful fish but the frame n is not ideal anyway: quite common so difficult to swim and small boats "at bottom of glass" that bothers to swim! In addition the crossing was complicated! We have been questioned on the beach to go to the place of the corals with a small boat without engine. The men who were there were young and strong. Let's go to 4: 2000 rupees per person (already sounds a bit expensive). Time to leave an old man comes very very skinny it's going rowing (awkward to ask a gentleman of this age of rowing for 4 young people...). We reach the place after 20 min of ream it out we had stay in water 15 minutes and there it starts raining the gentleman told us to get back on the boat, we're back and here the galley! so many currents of winds etc, a passengers help the old "fisherman" who seems to suffer so we put a lot of time to come back at the beach (although 30-40 min). Arrived asked organizers to start later because it stopped raining and we stayed in water 15 minutes instead of one hour on site, and there we are told to repay, that he paid the man, that he can't help if the weather isn't good etc (e almost t he makes us feel guilty because he paid the old fisherman, it's difficult to paddle, I bet more that he has not given the 8000 rupees). In short the impression of having been scammed... bad experience...

  • Go for it only if you love dead corals, loads and loads of DEAD corals! Hardly any fish and no turtles at all. Total waste of time and money.  more »
  • Immediately I say that I fell in love with Sri Lanka and all beaches I liked! Specifically in this place I liked to wander into the sunset (on the waves shake dozens of boats), looks very nice! In the morning on the beach grounds several large turtles, they can feed the algae and simply enjoy. The only negative-in some places the stones and come have a strip of beach with house reef where many sea urchins! I immediately drew attention to them and almost died at one of them)
