  • I super like Thangamalee Sanctury. I am moved there several times between Haputale and Idalgashinna, came back by train or down to Needwood estate (Portuguese Fort) and Haldumulla and back to Haputale bus. The trail begins monastery left beside the entrance to the Derby and then leads 3 km through the forest up on the train tracks. Then it goes through a short tunnel to the station 1 km away by Idalgashinna. The forest is very diverse in flora and fauna. Usually you can see deer and monkeys, but also many birds. If one wanders through the forest (s.a. Haputale and Pitaratmalie forest), then you get an idea of how it looked like 170 years ago, before the first plantations were built.
