Ritigala Forest Monastery, Habarana

(4.4/5 based on 180+ reviews on the web)
Witness the remnants of an ancient culture as you trek the winding forest paths at Ritigala Forest Monastery. Originally inhabited by local aboriginals called Yukas, the ruins of the monastery complex are linked by stone paths that lead through the old trees of the jungle. Look for the ancient man-made reservoir, most likely used for ritual bathing purposes: dating between 437 and 367 BCE, it represents an engineering marvel for its time. Hire a knowledgeable guide that can explain the significance of each of the monastery ruins. As you walk between sites, listen to the sounds of the jungle, and contemplate the transportation of heavy rocks necessary for the complex's construction. Work out when and for how long to visit Ritigala Forest Monastery and other Habarana attractions using our handy Habarana itinerary planner.

  • Very nice walk in the forest where arise the ruins antiques, singing birds, rustling of leaves caused by the monkeys jumping from branch to branch... a slight sensation of being Indiana Jones searching for hidden treasure... Few people, a low entry price ($2), easy path... A lovely moment! We agree with the site by tuk tuk and left Habarana at 8 and were back for lunch, so we could do another tour in the day.

  • A lot of work has gone into restoring the pavement that leads op to the various parts of the monastery. There is little information available on site. Take a rough guide to get some idea of what is go...  more »
  • Walk for peace, the serenity of the site and the pleasure of a walk in nature. A long path of stone sinks deeper into the forest, the monkeys are waiting. No need to guide but should not arrive too late for the walk to the end because the site closes at 16:30. Admission is charged.
