Cave Nature / Park
The Ravana Falls is a popular sightseeing attraction in Sri Lanka. It currently ranks as one of the widest falls in the country.DescriptionThis waterfall measures approximately 25m in height and cascades from an oval-shaped concave rock outcrop. During the local wet season, the waterfall turns into what is said to resemble an areca flower with withering petals. But this is not the case in the dry season, where the flow of water reduces dramatically. The falls form part of the Ravana Ella Wildlife Sanctuary, and is located 6km away from the local railway station at Ella.Historical legendThe falls have been named after the legendary king Ravana, which is connected to the famous Indian epic, the Ramayana. According to legend, it is said that Ravana (who was the king of Sri Lanka at the time) had kidnapped princess Sita, and had hidden her in the caves behind this waterfall, now simply known as the Ravana Ella Cave. The reason for the kidnapping is said to be a revenge for slicing off the nose of his sister by Rama (husband of Sita) and his brother Laxmana. At the time, the cave was surrounded with thick forests in the midst of wilderness. It is also believed that Rama’s queen bathed in a pool that accumulated the water falling from this waterfall. They believed that Ravana has played the Ravanahatha over here. The caveThe famous Ravana Ella Cave lies 1370m above sea level on the foundation of a cliff. The cave is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Sri Lanka, located 11km away from Bandarawela. Excavations undertaken in the cave uncovered evidence of human habitation dating back to 25,000 years.

  • Not worth the hike. A very normal cave with no guide or information about the place. There was a local selling tea midway with a nice view.. enjoyed a good cup of ginger tea
  • It was just a good climb. Nothing special up there. If you are a cave lover, you may like it. But the place is scary in the evening as if it is haunted. There are places of nice views here and there when you are climbing. There is a nice corner shop where you can have tea and have a traditional snack before or after the climb. There is an interesting myth about the place, you can get to know about it from locals living around there.
  • Have too much steps to go on foot. Very beautiful environment out there
  • 700 steps not the 640 like the guard says (yes 40 steps do matter) the climb is good you get view of the sorroundings. But the cave it self is disappointing a dusty cave. But if you think abiut the legends that lived there it's worth the climb I guess
  • not a difficult climb but it's no walk in the park. the cave is just a cave but if you like that sort of thing then you might enjoy it. the view gradually becomes more and more beautiful as you continue to ascend.
