Take a cooking class or simply savor Sri Lanka's authentic cuisine at Ella Spice Garden, a private household set in a highland village amid world-famous tea plantations. With a hands-on approach, an informative English-speaking teacher will take you on a tour of all the Sri Lankan spices cultivated in this private garden. Roam through peppers, cloves, turmeric, and chili plants, take a sample, and then roll up your sleeves to hit the kitchen. Classes, followed by a meal, are suitable for all levels of hobby chefs. Alternatively, you can just stop by for a tasty meal, mostly featuring curry-style traditional dishes. Make sure you call in advance. • We were for 3 days in Ella and the cooking was one of our highlights there. Starts against 5 with a few explanations of spices and how the Curry mixtures occur, then you start in the small kitchen in the family home together to snip and cook - we have sambal dhal and potato curry garlic, made and coconut. The young chef has included each and was super in his statements and also funny. We also had a great group, so we just had a nice evening with nice people. The food was awesome - tasted everything very well and seems to cook well at home. Highly recommended!

  • I learned a lot about spices, what they are used for, and how the plants look before you get them in your spice cabinet! Very cool :) The tour costs 100 rupees and after you can buy some of the spices, most costing 200 rupees for 100 grams. Great experience!
  • Nice man gives you a tour around his spice garden, shows you the most commonly used spices, lets you smell/show pictures. Interesting.
