Demodara Nine Arch Bridge, Ella

(950+ reviews on the web)
Bridge
A major crossing point along the nation's main rail artery, Demodara Nine Arch Bridge stands as a marvel of the region's colonial-era engineering. Completed in 1921, the bridge features nine successive arched spans stretching 91.5 m (300 ft) across a small valley. Standing at a height of 24 m (80 ft), the structure features no steel or metal in its construction--only bricks, cement, and rocks. You can make your way to the bridge from the nearby town of Ella via a jungle trail, at the end of which you'll have a clear view of this landmark structure. Alternatively, ride the train between the two stations on either side of the bridge for fine views and a chance to travel like the local population. • The way to the viaduct was quite complicated. The bridge itself is nice, but I think that there are better places to visit in Ella, especially if you have only very limited time there.  more »
  • There are 3 ways to visit the 9 arch bridge. 1. Walk the train track from Ella. About a hours walk. 2. Get a Tuk Tuk. 3. Hire a scooter and find it your self. This was our option. When going by scoote...  more »
  • On our way to Little Adam's Peak, we walked along the train tracks, through a short tunnel before emerging at Nine Arch Bridge. The bridge is an architectural achievement and looks simply amazing. We ...  more »

  • This place has historical value and excellence of engineering Can be reach from two directions. This view can be seen by reaching from passers road. It is a very narrow road. Be careful... very difficult if another vehicles come on other direction
  • Our driver parked on the road, so we had a 500 meter walk to the viewpoint. In the middle of a very nice piece of land, the bridge does look very impressive. The bridge by itself wouldn't be so spectacular, there are a lot bigger, older or otherwise more special bridges in the world. But the nice combination of nature with the bridge fitting in very well makes this a good choice for a quick stop or a hiking trip if staying in the area. With free entrance, this is very recommended!
  • It's a nice work of art by the British done a long time ago. Better go to catch the train timings. If not, it's not worth hiking for
  • After our walk to Adam's Peak, we went directly to Nine Arches Bridge. There are not enough signs but it was nice little adventure with the family. It's a bit of a mission to go back to downtown the only way is via a tuktuk. But still, excellent views!
  • One of the greatest sight seeing place in Sri Lanka. Better if you can check the train timetable and go to get proper rail crossing over the bridge.
