Demodara Nine Arch Bridge, Ella
Categories: Bridges, Landmarks, Tourist Spots
A major crossing point along the nation's main rail artery, Demodara Nine Arch Bridge stands as a marvel of the region's colonial-era engineering. Completed in 1921, the bridge features nine successive arched spans stretching 91.5 m (300 ft) across a small valley. Standing at a height of 24 m (80 ft), the structure features no steel or metal in its construction--only bricks, cement, and rocks. You can make your way to the bridge from the nearby town of Ella via a jungle trail, at the end of which you'll have a clear view of this landmark structure. Alternatively, ride the train between the two stations on either side of the bridge for fine views and a chance to travel like the local population. We walked here after Little Adam's Peak since it's nearby. It was a beautiful bridge, but it was not as majestic as it seems in photos. Regardless, it's still a nice site. The hike down there is very ... read more »
Walked about ten minutes off the road with my driver to see the bridge and watched a train pass. Nice place to take pictures.

How ever you get there it's worth the effort. Do try and catch a train crossing, you can get a cold ginger beer from the 9 arch cafe and wait in the shade. There have been a few bag and camera snatching of late but there is a police presence and it all felt safe to us. The bridge is a fantastic atchivment in a stunning setting.
Beautiful bridge and really amazing to behold with the scenery. If you're lucky enough to watch a train go past it'll be a great experience but nevertheless it's worth a look, the architecture in such a remote place is breathtaking
We had a driver to drop us off anywhere we wanted, and we didn't want to walk on the rails as we were with 2 small kids. One way to reach is through a tea plantation road which starts in front of '98 acres'. This trail is available at OSM maps. After a nice walk it reaches the Asanka cafe. A short-but-steep trail goes down to the bridge. Another trail up is seen on Google Maps a little farther from the tunnel. It leads to 'Nine Arch Bridge Good and Best View Place' cafe. Overall the bridge worth a visit.
One of the major attractions on Ella.In order to access the bridge you will have to rail-hike from Ella railway station to the Demodara Railway Station. Always beware of the train.Especially when crossing through the Railway -tunnel.Carry enough water and travel light. Do not litter. The Iconic creation of Sri Lankan Industrial Age.
Awesome work done by one of our own Sri Lankan. If you are visiting... check the train timetable beforehand.
