Demodara Nine Arch Bridge, Ella

(4.5/5 based on 750+ reviews on the web)
A major crossing point along the nation's main rail artery, Demodara Nine Arch Bridge stands as a marvel of the region's colonial-era engineering. Completed in 1921, the bridge features nine successive arched spans stretching 91.5 m (300 ft) across a small valley. Standing at a height of 24 m (80 ft), the structure features no steel or metal in its construction--only bricks, cement, and rocks. You can make your way to the bridge from the nearby town of Ella via a jungle trail, at the end of which you'll have a clear view of this landmark structure. Alternatively, ride the train between the two stations on either side of the bridge for fine views and a chance to travel like the local population. • A bit of a hike down up and down a narrow pathway to reach the bridge but well-worth it. Beautiful design and construction.
  • It's no Sydney Harbour Bridge, but it's a nice landmark in its own right. Also, it's more about the experience of walking to and from the Bridge, taking in the beautiful landscapes. I'd recommend goin...  more »

  • Great view!! Its better if you take the rail track to walk there. Kinda rough but worth a try!! And there is a refreshment spot called the nine arch cafe now. So you wont be thirsty πŸ˜…
  • Beautiful bridge! Nice for taking photos. You can walk back to Ella on the track. (The police advised us) when you walk trough the tunnel its 2.5 km to the station. Beware of leeches when walk near the track.
  • It was lovely to see this old bridge. It is a lovely piece of architecture from the past. If you walk into the tunnel and shine a light on the dark walls, you'll see tiny sparrow nests on them. The arches by themselves have large honey combs of the Apis dorsata bees.
  • Great scenery..! It would be much greater if u can catch the train just coming out of the tunnel. even though u miss it, still it's really a great scene. This massive bridge is built entirely of solid rocks, bricks and cement without using a single piece of steel. The bridge was finally commissioned in 1921
  • A great build by Sri Lankans using only stone and mortar without any steel. A must visit if you're in Ella. It's bit of a walk but the view is great, especially when the train passes through. You may be able to hire a tuk if you are lucky to go very close to it.
