Demodara Nine Arch Bridge, Ella

4.5
A major crossing point along the nation's main rail artery, Demodara Nine Arch Bridge stands as a marvel of the region's colonial-era engineering. Completed in 1921, the bridge features nine successive arched spans stretching 91.5 m (300 ft) across a small valley. Standing at a height of 24 m (80 ft), the structure features no steel or metal in its construction--only bricks, cement, and rocks. You can make your way to the bridge from the nearby town of Ella via a jungle trail, at the end of which you'll have a clear view of this landmark structure. Alternatively, ride the train between the two stations on either side of the bridge for fine views and a chance to travel like the local population. • If you go over the bridge runs with k back to the tunnel, you can right and pad up, from here you have a super nice view on the train that comes down to drive away. Ask at the café at the tunnel to the train times. Also nice! Walk through the tunnel and follow the track, you will arrive at the station of Ella.

  • 45 min long walk by the railway from Ella trainstation. With tuk-tuk it takes only 10-15 min, for ca. 600 rupee.  more »

  • This place has historical value and excellence of engineering Can be reach from two directions. This view can be seen by reaching from passers road. It is a very narrow road. Be careful... very difficult if another vehicles come on other direction
  • A picturesque piece of engineering along the train line near Ella station. As the name suggests, a nine arched bridge spans over a gorge. If you can time your visit to match a time when train passes, you would be able to experience it fully.
  • We were lucky to find accommodation on the hill over this bridge. We saw this bridge every single morning. If you like watching trains be patient. There are only few of them crossing this bridge. The bridge was ours in the morning.
  • Huge history and impressive to see. Time it well and you will see a train crossing the bridge. There is a very nice restaurant uphil with a good view over the entire area.
  • Our driver parked on the road, so we had a 500 meter walk to the viewpoint. In the middle of a very nice piece of land, the bridge does look very impressive. The bridge by itself wouldn't be so spectacular, there are a lot bigger, older or otherwise more special bridges in the world. But the nice combination of nature with the bridge fitting in very well makes this a good choice for a quick stop or a hiking trip if staying in the area. With free entrance, this is very recommended!
