Caves · Gardens · Spas
On a trip to Dambulla, visit the largest and best-preserved cave temple complexes in the country, declared a World Heritage Site. Sightseeing in Dambulla almost exclusively centers around this icon of Sri Lanka, full of statues of Buddha and Sri Lankan kings. The town itself is crammed with traffic and features one of the biggest wholesale markets in the country. Lovers of water activities can visit the nearby reservoir, a popular outing spot year-round with hot-air ballooning and a spa. A few restaurants in town serve up a variety of spicy dishes. Take stress off the schedule by using our Sri Lanka trip planner.

Where to stay in Dambulla

In recent years, Dambulla tourism has boomed among globetrotters, and the area now offers a variety of lodgings. Choose from pricey boutique hotels; inexpensive cottages, guesthouses, and inns; or backpackers' lodges around the bus station. Accommodations in Dambulla tend to follow the Kandy-Jaffna highway and Kandalama Road in congested areas, and four-star establishments cluster around the reservoir. Given that the World Heritage Site cave is pretty much the only attraction around, visitors tend to stay in the more relaxing areas of Kandy and Sigiriya nearby.
