Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo

4.3
#3 of 6 in Parks in Colombo
Stroll through Viharamahadevi Park, the oldest and largest park in Colombo. Lush and well-maintained plant life, such as tall trees and colorful flowers, surround the pathways and benches. Walk over the lake's suspension bridge and visit the war memorial, paying tribute to Sri Lankan and European soldiers who died in both world wars. Kids love the extensive play area featuring a massive playhouse, swings, slides, and mini hills. Pick up some cotton candy as you walk over to the small but rewarding aquarium. • This surface is essential in Colombo's busy daily life. We took it as a haven to rest in between our daily walks to visit several places around it.  more »
  • Great place to be with kids.it's in the center of the city and can get the tuk tuk Ride easily. We loved the boat ride with turtles the most.  more »
  • Really good place to have a chat and walking with loved one. The municipal council maintain it very well.  more »

  • The Viharamahadevi Park is the largest public park located in Colombo. A cool, Calming and well maintained place with the lake, the suspension bridge and the World War memorial. The park covers a lot of old trees with beautiful pathways.
  • This is a good place to take your family or friends to enjoy a short walk or spend a few hours in tranquility if you want a place like that in Colombo. They clean the place frequently so there are no smells or trash about usually. If you plan to have a photo shoot here make sure you get permission and license for it. I recommend coming here in the morning since its cooler and the air is more fresh. There is a restaurant in the park with fast food and soft drinks. If you visit, keep the place clean please.
  • This is the largest public park in Colombo and is maintained by the Colombo Municipal Council. The park include a huge Buddha statue, outdoor stadium, a series of water fountains, an aquarium, a children's play area and etc… This place is very peaceful. You forget that you are still in Colombo. Walking under the trees on the green is the best feeling.
  • Mostly not crowded. Large area. Pleasant atmosphere and ambiance, great for relaxation, family picnics, outdoor get-togethers. Not much play areas and entertainment for kids. Perfect for readers and jogging. Bicycle Rent needs development and well maintained bicycles. The pond needs some cleaning. Requires more monkey/pull bars and calisthenics workout zones.
  • A cool place in the heart of Colombo city. However suggests that some more fun activities and tools to implement for kids. This is a good place for brisk walking, jogging and aerobic exercises. Parents to be more careful when accompanying kids to some areas of the park. There is a good restaurant there you can enjoy fresh fruit juice, cupcakes and sandwiches for a reasonable price. However, suggests improvement in restaurant service.

Where to stay in Colombo

Despite its relatively low cost of living, Colombo accommodations tend to be fairly pricey. Close to the sea and the lake, as well as near the city's parks and the plazas, hotels come in the form of old colonial buildings and ultra-modern high rises, with a decent selection of each to choose from. Budget-conscious travelers should pay attention to the short rental options in the town's more residential areas, or look for the smattering of simple, but serviceable options close to the main train stations, and on the side streets set back from the waterfront.
