St Anthony s Church Kochikade Colombo, Colombo

(4.3/5 based on 180+ reviews on the web)
Though a Catholic cathedral, St Anthony s Church Kochikade Colombo represents a welcoming and important pilgrimage place for Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians alike. The 19-century church stands on the site where Friar Anthony--persecuted by the Dutch authorities as a Catholic--performed a miracle by making the sea recede. Visitors of all faiths come to celebrate the intriguing and mystical history here. Tuesdays, dedicated to St. Anthony, tend to be the busiest, with masses held throughout the day. While this may offer the ideal opportunity to see the church at its best, visiting at other times will afford a quieter experience. • A beautiful church originally built in 1828. It has been renovated with money raised by all, rich and poor, but mostly the latter. The architecture inside is amazing and it is a must see.  more »
  • The Church is no special building - but all of the people who visit the House of God, are particularly impressive and it are not few. We were there on a Tuesday morning and found a rieisges crowd. It was hardly possible to reach into the Interior. The local worshippers pray, drink of self-reflection water or donate a figure of the crucified jesus loving Cuddles. Beeindruckened is the devotion with which people do all this - which is proverbial, almost excessive piety. Warning – in the Interior, there is a ban on photography.
