Pettah, Colombo

#10 of 32 in Shopping in Colombo
Head for an authentic local shopping experience at Pettah. Make your way through the labyrinth leading between the countless tents where local merchants sell their goods. The flea market is more suitable for those who enjoy a more intense shopping experience. It gets quite crowded; however, you can expect to purchase items for a much lower price than in stores. Browse everything from precious gems and gold to fruits and vegetables. Using our online itinerary creator, Colombo attractions like Pettah can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

If you are in Colombo and up for some cheap shopping, this is your place. There are hundreds of stalls selling almost each and everything you can imagine about. Pretty handy and the prices are cheap a...  more »

The quarter is colorful, loud, full and lively. It is offered almost exclusively goods of rather poor quality, here you can buy any really nice pieces of clothing or crafts. It is not geared to tourists and sold many things for everyday use of the locals. If you stand on materials as sold by the meter, but it is the right place. Felt really well I don't have me as unaccompanied young woman (approximately 30 years) however. There were hardly any women on the street and I saw few other tourists. Because it is immediately recognized due to the different skin color as a foreigner, you addressed every two meters. People are all nice, so no hard feelings, most just see an opportunity, a couple come to just to chat or you will be asked for a Selfie (always politely refuse), but it's still rather cumbersome. All in all worth watching but nothing for a shopping tour, on which you really would like to buy something. Rather good to get an impression of the life of the locals.

In arranging my tour I chose to stop in Colombo nearly solo x visit the Pettah market. I think it is the most characteristic and place that deserves to be seen ... but hard men and women is x. The area is vast and divided by products. There's a lot of confusion you might find the object of your dreams like that. Low prices and mandatory bargaining. Also lots of fake products. Traders are a bit insistent enough that you put your eyes on a product and you don't give up more, in some cases arrive to chase. This is Pettah or you love her or hate her, there are no half measures.

A pretty place to shop and eat by the water, but its dead in the middle of the day (probably because of the heat) and there aren't many different food options. Conveniently near the train station

I just happen to love this places. After a cup of tea I went everywhere. Like every good market you have technology, food, shoes, mobile accessories and clothing. Noise, crazy and exciting.

    Good bargain power for customers

Can find any item for lesser price if you know where it is. Otherwise you have to search a lot

The new Road system is an advantage but still traffic is worse during day. Which they had built high rise building and had more facilities in the buildings. It's hotter than outside when inside market shops. Prices are cheap..

Where to stay in Colombo

Despite its relatively low cost of living, Colombo accommodations tend to be fairly pricey. Close to the sea and the lake, as well as near the city's parks and the plazas, hotels come in the form of old colonial buildings and ultra-modern high rises, with a decent selection of each to choose from. Budget-conscious travelers should pay attention to the short rental options in the town's more residential areas, or look for the smattering of simple, but serviceable options close to the main train stations, and on the side streets set back from the waterfront.
