Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, Colombo

4.2
#7 of 42 in Sightseeing in Colombo
Landmark Tourist Spot
See the red and white brickwork of Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, also known as Red Mosque, and experience serenity in the busiest part of the city. Built in 1906, the mosque requires visitors to dress conservatively and, if entering, remove their shoes. During prayers and on Fridays, the mosque closes its doors to non-muslims. Browse through the different stores around the mosque, and experience the lifestyle of another culture. • Amazing building. Women allowed in. Sheets available for wrapping around exposed legs /shoulders. Beautiful! Free, but donation box available
  • Spectacular historical site definitely worth a visit -- just beware that those suspected of not being Muslim will be shunted to a separate office. Best to enter with appropriate dress and explore with the locals to avoid being separated out - and money demanded of you!
  • Beautiful mosque with all facilities. Can accommodate large crowd. Jummah prayers are conducted here.
  • The friendly guys at the shoe shelves told us to wait in an office. After a while a nice young man came and told us something about the building and Islamic culture. They have a big screen with aerial pictures and with live cam videos from inside the building. That was great because tourists in general and especially women are not allowed into the mosque. All was free of charge, but they have a donation box if you want to leave a little something as a thank you.
  • A very beautiful masjid MASHAALAAH

Where to stay in Colombo

Despite its relatively low cost of living, Colombo accommodations tend to be fairly pricey. Close to the sea and the lake, as well as near the city's parks and the plazas, hotels come in the form of old colonial buildings and ultra-modern high rises, with a decent selection of each to choose from. Budget-conscious travelers should pay attention to the short rental options in the town's more residential areas, or look for the smattering of simple, but serviceable options close to the main train stations, and on the side streets set back from the waterfront.
