3.8
#1 of 123 in Shopping in Sri Lanka
As the oldest building in the area, Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct offers historical colonial architecture in addition to its fine shops and restaurants. Originally used as a hospital by the Dutch in the 17th century, the attraction was later transformed into a shopping and dining precinct. Pick up souvenirs, such as clothing, jewelry, handicrafts, and artworks, or find outside seating where you can sip wine and watch passersby. Wander around the two large courtyards and keep an eye out for street musicians, theater performances, and art exhibitions, too. • Sure it's expensive. But it's a nice place to hang out and pick up some last minute gifts before flying out. It's nice to hang out here at the end of the day - right from sunset to dinner time  more »

  • The old hospital of the Dutch is opposite Fairway Hotel Colombo. Pretty cool, well renovated. Fit the purpose: drink and do some shopping. Passing more than you get on the main road near the sea. To visit

  • Have been there since it's opening many times. Excellent place to chill with family and friends. Nice Ambience as well. Slipknot is the best band and superb every time I have listened to them. For a weekday or weekend evening the best place in Colombo to meetup over drinks. Highly recommend.
  • What a nice place to have a cool time with your loved once. There are so many types of stores all over here. You can buy foods and drinks and can have them on outdoor seats. It is such a beautiful view it gives in evening. Specially with a cool or hot drink it will make more awesome. Specially this is Christmas season neh, so there are so many beautiful Christmas decorations all over the place. Specially there are food fests through out every months. Try that out too...

  • A must visit if you are in Colombo and a foodie. A heritage building with modern vibes. Spend some time over a meal or a drink especially sitting out in corridor as you soak in the atmosphere
  • This was built as a hospital by the Dutch in 1681 to look after the health of officers and other staff serving under the Dutch East India Company. The hospital's close proximity to the harbor allowed it to serve Dutch seafarers. Over the years, this has been used for several different purposes (Colombo Fort Police station, Colombo apothecary, etc.). In 1996, It suffered heavy damage from the LTTE attack that followed the Central Bank bombing and in 2011, it was transformed into a shopping and dining precinct, preserving it's historic architecture. Today, this is a prominent venue facilitated with a number of bars, restaurants and shops, that also provides a great view of the city.

Where to stay in Colombo

Despite its relatively low cost of living, Colombo accommodations tend to be fairly pricey. Close to the sea and the lake, as well as near the city's parks and the plazas, hotels come in the form of old colonial buildings and ultra-modern high rises, with a decent selection of each to choose from. Budget-conscious travelers should pay attention to the short rental options in the town's more residential areas, or look for the smattering of simple, but serviceable options close to the main train stations, and on the side streets set back from the waterfront.
