  • Loved the variety of historical, painting and costume artefacts. Not too busy and lots of information about each area.  more »
  • This a well laid-out display of important parts of Srilankan history. The display starts from the Paleolithic era and ends at the recent past (1930-1940). The most impressive part for me as a visitor ...  more »
  • The Museum is a must. Sri Lanka has an amazing cultural, engineering and intellectual history going back thousands of years. I had no idea.  more »

  • It was renovated and beautiful. Good to anyone who wants to dig into history. Lot of information and organised. Animal museum is not good. Inside very hot and dark. No proper lighting
  • wasn't as bad as i thought. floor plan of display categories is okay. No AC but can be cool because of large open doors and fans throughout. the exhibition is worthwhile just once, has loads of historical stuff
  • Excellent collections of art and artifacts depicting the richness of Sri Lankan history and culture, but the discriminatory / prejudicial pricing was horrific! Seeing local students allowed to enter at decent (and fair) prices while foreign students were forced to pay multiples more was a souring experience! Adding insult to injury, wealthy Sri Lankans were afforded entry at small fractions of what foreigners from developing countries (and backpackers on small budgets) were required to pay. This prejudicial - and highly discriminatory -approach to pricing must be discarded in the interest of fairness. Either charge everyone the same price -- or charge nobody anything at all. And if one wishes to discriminate, then do so on the basis of one's ability to pay, allowing individuals to self-report and give what they can. This would be the most fair.
  • Plenty of items are displayed haphazardly. No proper guidance given. Shirt descriptions would have been better than lengthy ones.
  • Good collection of ancient artifacts, culture etc. in a colonial era building itself a historical value. Zoological and botanical sections are also available, but they must be improved. Charged for entrance. extra charged for if taking photographs. Historical items should be arranged more orderly as it will help visitors to understand history more easily. Needs more directions. After all it's a place needs to be visited by both local and foreign visitors to know what Sri lanka really was.

Where to stay in Colombo

Despite its relatively low cost of living, Colombo accommodations tend to be fairly pricey. Close to the sea and the lake, as well as near the city's parks and the plazas, hotels come in the form of old colonial buildings and ultra-modern high rises, with a decent selection of each to choose from. Budget-conscious travelers should pay attention to the short rental options in the town's more residential areas, or look for the smattering of simple, but serviceable options close to the main train stations, and on the side streets set back from the waterfront.
