Bridge
Built across the Galland Oya River in the 16th century, Bogoda Brdge is entirely made up of organic material, chiefly jackfruit and arjun tree logs and wooden nails. Standing on a huge, 11 m (36 ft) long tree trunk, the 1.5 m (4.9 ft) wide footbridge has wooden fences erected on either side. The structure is covered by a 2.4 m (7.9 ft) tiled roof spanning its entire length of nearly 15 m (49 ft). This is considered as the oldest surviving wooden bridge in Sri Lanka. • After arrival on junk-slope, we arrived on the forecourt. To the temple with the bridge, it goes down several levels through a small Grove. Here the "overseer" has told then much of the history, we were allowed to do a look at the caves (usually locked), because of the musty odor we wanted but not deeper in the caves inside (are also very low). In the Bogoda Temple are centuries-old paintings, and were only rarely gently restored. A real gem here. The wooden bridge spans Brook, which here dabbles in steps down - a little refreshment on a hot day. Since there were no other tourists there during our visit, we were able to enjoy this place of power away from the other attractions alone. For the Temple a small conservation contribution charged by about RS 200.

  • This is a historical place where it shows the strength of our hela people. For the wonder, the bridge was built without using single nail. This is a place which needs to be protect by us. So pls when you visit here make sure that you don't make environment dirty.
  • Bogoda bridge and the Buddhist temple is situated at Hali-Ela in Badulla district. The bridge is more than 400 years old, is the oldest wooden bridge to be standing in Sri Lanka. The bridge was built in 16th century during the Dambadeniaya Era, was build by King Walagamba. The bridge has been build with an interlock system where no nails have been used for the construction of the bridge. The bridge was constructed across the Gallanda Oya. There are three wooden beams measuring 11 meters each, and cut from single trunks. The entire bridge is resting on these beams, and the decorative pillars and the side railing are connected to each other with an interlock system which holds its shape, and does not posses a single nail. It is said that the the uniqueness of the bridge is the interlock system and the fact that there is a roof that has been fixed to the entire length of the bridge.
  • Beautiful wooden bridge.. only use wooden parts. It has long beautiful historical story
  • Beautiful & historical place in Badulla. A must see. Only problem is the road.
  • The only remaining wooden bridge which used only wood parts while constructing.
