Sri Maha Boodhi Temple, Anuradhapura
(4/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Visit Sri Maha Boodhi Temple to see the most sacred object in Buddhist history--the Maha Bodhi tree. The ancient branches of this 2,247-year-old tree represent the place where the Lord Buddha found enlightenment. Local pilgrims and devotees come to worship the holy site, while chants and prayers resonate through the oldest continuing Buddhist monastery and the center of Theravada Buddhism. See nearby Love Maha Paya, the nine-story house built between 167-137 BCE, as well as Jethavanaramaya Dagaba with its alien-like sphere that contains Buddha’s relic, and many other monastic buildings. You can explore the complex on your own, or hire a guide for a more comprehensive experience. • This is one of very prominent place for all Buddhists. If you travel to Anuradhapura, this is the 2nd place after Ruwanweliseya you should visit.
  • Inserted in the complex of pilgrimage and prayer of Mayura Parivena, right next to the tree of Buddha, is local with many people praying and doing prayers sitting on the floor. The entire set is a lot of hustle and bustle that does not prevent the meditation. Many tourists also. Perhaps the busiest Buddhist site that I visited. Not to be missed.

  • A lot of local offerings that bear to a tree as the Bodhi thanks for completed requests. Very many worshipers sit around and read written, young and old. Guarding the tree of descendants of those very first guards who came from India along with the germ.
