Ruwanwelisaya Dagoba, Anuradhapura

4.4
#2 of 26 in Things to do in Anuradhapura
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Hailed for its architecture, the stupa of Ruwanwelisaya Dagoba has a sacred reputation among Buddhists around the world. Once you see its pure white dome towering overhead, it's easy to understand why. Although ancient, the stupa stands as one of the world's tallest monuments, and also holds the titles of one of the Solosmasthana and one of the Atamasthana (places of veneration). Keep in mind you have to remove your shoes to enter, so consider visiting in the morning for cooler weather; if you go in the afternoon, you have to tour the attraction barefoot on the hot stones, or carry a pair of socks with you. Using our custom trip planner, Anuradhapura attractions like Ruwanwelisaya Dagoba can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • It is a very nice place. I was attracted to the peace in the place. Nice place to see Buddhists worshipping all over the place .  more »
  • Visited this as part of the Sacred city tour. It was a holiday so crowded. About 38 degrees and you have to walk a fair way to it- long walk in the heat - barefoot on boiling hot stones.  more »
