Categories: Landmarks, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.2/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web
Look upon the awesome structure of Jethawanaramaya Stupa, among the tallest stupas in the ancient world. Standing 400 feet (122 m), the mound-like structure utilizes a whopping 93.3 million baked bricks. Set in an ancient Buddhist monastery, the building likely dates back to the 4th and 5th centuries BCE--and supposedly houses a sash that was tied by the Buddha himself. Conservation efforts are slowly underway here; you may notice trees growing from the temple itself, evidence of years of neglect. Walk around the site, taking in the intricate stone carvings and reclining Buddha. You'll need to take off your shoes to visit; bring some socks to navigate the hot stone ground, and wear long pants or a skirt. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Anuradhapura holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Jethawanaramaya Stupa and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.
