Dagoba of Thuparama, Anuradhapura
(4/5 based on 120+ reviews on the web)
Visit ancient Dagoba of Thuparama, the oldest Sri Lankan "dagoba," which represents the earliest monument of Buddhism. After the introduction of Buddhism, Devanmpiyatissa built the dagoba in the third century BCE, using the right collarbone of the Buddha in its construction, according to legend. Throughout its history, the dagoba has been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times, but has never lost its distinctive bell-like shape. You need to take your shoes off to enter the site, so bring some socks with you to protect against the hot stones and sandy paths. • The title is not very flattering when you know that it contains the collarbone of the Buddha. Apart from this detail, nothing impressive if we already seen major temples.

  • Enjoyed the grounds more than the Dagoba. It is a very spiritual place but it was just another Dagoba to me. Had hoped for more.
  • There were quite a lot of people the time I was here. What a really interesting place to visit. Once again, a sacred place to visit, so be respectful. Nice construction, such a holy place to be.
