We had been recommended to visit this Santuario by a friend but had not had time to look up the details. We first looked in Zorito/Sorito but persevered until we found it just outside! What an amazing...  more »

I have returned to this place after more than 15 years... after having spent full summers here hosted by my grandmother, and emotion, despite the changes and transformations of space, is still there... The sanctuary our Lady of La Balma is the end of Sorites of el Maestrazgo, in Castellón, almost on the border with the province of Teruel. Close also of Morelia. The place is an indescribable beauty. I spent many summers of my youth in this sanctuary, and although it did not have anything to do with the type of holding current hospitality of the place, the building and location do not cease surprising making it a magical place. Not in vain is part of the history of the magic Spain, formerly here brought to sufferers of epilepsy believing they were possessed to the Virgin of La Balma deliver them from these evils! The building is located on the mountain, and the symbiosis between nature and architecture is total. Tunnels, ceilings, authentic rock walls. Welcome to the sanctuary a cross covered with beautiful frescoes that is anchored along the route of the camino de Santiago, which passed through this area of Castellón. Currently the building houses part of the church dedicated to the Virgin, a hotel of pseudo-diseno which is worth booking in advance (is always full because there are few rooms) and one restaurant more than acceptable with fixed menu of local cuisine with a modern touch and fabulous views of the Bergantes River and the village of Zorita to the Fund. It is a place of immense calm. Before its reform was much better, more austere and genuine, but I understand that times are changing, and sometimes it is necessary to adapt to the era that touch to revitalize sites that otherwise could fall into neglect. However, although architectural reform is not very invasive, in my opinion, the building has lost much charm and there are elements that break too with the building. What was the old restaurant through the arches, is now an open area without any use which should be taken advantage of how space rest, armchairs, sofas... I would have put here the cafeteria instead of the location next to the arches. On the other hand, the chairs and tables of plastic of the cafeteria in the arches should be replaced by less aggressive furniture with the beautiful surroundings. It is a pity that old laundry there after the reform and ex-votos and promises that left devotees in the church be gone completely... I wonder who will be been theirs... arms of wax, bridal gowns, locks of hair, faded photos... developing Church in a fantastic and mysterious place. I know that I am a real fortunate to have been able to spend in this place full summers during many years of youth, how a wild hermit and having enjoyed many things that the current visitor not savour with the same authenticity. It is a bit paradoxical that a sanctuary insulated between mountains ends up making it is a kind of elitist and chic hotel... But whatever, this site is a marvel for the visitor and the surroundings hide sites and amazing experiences. Walks, trails, pine trees, pools where swim in the River (on the road towards Aiguaviva), in short, pure nature!

The sanctuary is very cool is located in the rock. The funny thing is that where the bar there are a lot of nests of swallows and is a sight to see as they enter and leave. Important if you will be eating book because it tends to be filled.
