Aljafería Palace, Zaragoza

4.5
Observe a blend of Islamic and Catholic culture at Aljafería Palace, a fortified medieval palace. Built during the second half of the 11th century by the Moors, the complex was expanded in the Renaissance by the Catholic king and queen. Take in the Moorish designs in the courtyard, the ornate ceiling of the Catholic Monarch’s throne room, and Mudéjar art in the onsite museum. Guided tours are available. The site is now host to the regional parliament of Aragón, which means access to certain areas of the palace is sometimes limited. Find out whether this will interfere with your visit at the tourist office. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Zaragoza holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Aljafería Palace and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

Sunday admission is free. We have gone with cart, but there is only one piece of the visit that have elevator. Boys visit guida, had too many people to learn biem, a part that our daughter was bored Guide did not expect to bring the entire group to continue his explanation and to always be the last, because of the cart and the rudeness of the people by using the lift without it.

We visit the Aljaferia within the activity "see Zaragoza with children" enjoy yourself (see separate opinion which I have done in relation to the guided tour for children). The Palace is, saving the distance, a micro-Alhambra very much. Amazing, well preserved and quite a surprise away from the areas of Spain that all associate with the former Al - Andalus!

Disappointing. Over-hyped. One can see at the front entrance that only a few original stones remain, the rest is rebuilt. After many years of ignoring what was a fabulous palace and then using it to house soldiers, what remains today left me wanting more. Free entrance on Sunday.

A very interesting place where you can learn a lot about the history of the castle. From the Muslims and the revolution to the way it is used now for political meetings. Tours are offered in several languages so if you don't speak Spanish, don't worry.

An incredible architecture. The palace was closed because of the parliament purpose. Worth to visit.

Beautiful place with a rich history behind it. Only a portion of the palace is open for the public though. The rest is occupied by local parliament. The best things are the courtyard and ceilings in the displayed rooms, not much more has survived...

Not very well restored. A lot of its character has been taken over by modern materials.

Where to stay in Zaragoza

When visiting this historical city, most visitors opt to stay in the old quarter, or Casco Viejo, for its convenient proximity to many of the city's iconic landmarks and compact network of local eateries, shops, and traditional architecture. The old quarter is located along the Ebre River meaning that you are only a scenic waterfront stroll away from the rest of the city's buzzing neighborhoods. Several newer hotels are located in the commercial zone centered around Gran Via, one of the city's main arteries, where plenty of shops and well-known restaurants line the buzzing streets. Alternatively, head to the University district for a mix of eclectic shops, quaint cafes, and a vibrant nightlife, where accommodation tends to be a bit cheaper.
