Plaza de la Virgen Blanca, Vitoria-Gasteiz

#2 of 47 in Things to do in Vitoria-Gasteiz
Architectural Building Landmark
Rising to prominence in the 17th century, during the expansion of the city of Vitoria, Plaza de la Virgen Blanca today continues to serve as a popular meeting place and hub of the surrounding town. Admire the wood-and-glass verandas and traditional construction of 19th-century Spanish homes surrounding the square. The large monument in the center, dedicated to the 1813 Battle of Vitoria, commemorates the victory that forced Napoleon’s retreat from Spain. Grab a coffee or some local Basque treats from one of the surrounding cafes, and explore the plaza’s many nooks and crannies. Be sure to bring your camera, as the surrounding buildings, backed by the spire of the Church of San Miguel, provide a popular photo opportunity. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Vitoria-Gasteiz holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • This triangular square is the centre of Vitoria-Gasteiz. All city life starts from it. It´s quite simple and austere but it means a lot to the locals. On the top part we find the Church of Saint Micha...  more »

  • This is the best place to be for any local festival or event, because it's always at the heart of it. It is also a very convenient meeting spot - closed to everybody and full of interesting landmarks ...  more »

  • La Virgen Blanca is the best place of Vitoria Gastez. In christmas there is an ice rink. In "fiestas", Celedon is celebrated there. When Alaves went up to "primera" they celebrated there.
  • Last visit : 08/2014 A great square with amazing architecture and an interesting historical background. There are plenty of restaurants and shops nearby and free Wi-Fi.
  • Beautiful square with nice cafes and pintxo bars around, often with music and other arts happening
  • It's a great place to take in the history and explore the many streets and bars around. From here you can enjoy the historical almond shape old quarters of Vitoria.
  • The most handsome spot in the Basque Country. A must!
