Plaza de la Virgen Blanca, Vitoria-Gasteiz

(4.5/5 based on 700+ reviews on the web)
Rising to prominence in the 17th century, during the expansion of the city of Vitoria, Plaza de la Virgen Blanca today continues to serve as a popular meeting place and hub of the surrounding town. Admire the wood-and-glass verandas and traditional construction of 19th-century Spanish homes surrounding the square. The large monument in the center, dedicated to the 1813 Battle of Vitoria, commemorates the victory that forced Napoleon’s retreat from Spain. Grab a coffee or some local Basque treats from one of the surrounding cafes, and explore the plaza’s many nooks and crannies. Be sure to bring your camera, as the surrounding buildings, backed by the spire of the Church of San Miguel, provide a popular photo opportunity. • Very central and full of life and people in spite of the cold and the winter season. It has in its top a great Church to visit, also in its surroundings there are numerous restaurants and bars where you can eat and drink to be very reasonable s, being in the pedestrian area is very crowded, at its Center, there is a very valuable monuments dedicated to the Indepensencia of the French war. In one way or another is or passes through it and is one of the best-known and most emblematic places.

  • The old market square until the end of the 19th century is nowadays one of the most popular places in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Built to end of the 18th in the new ensanche of the city, form part today day of the new image of Vitoria. It is the monument to the victorious battle of Vitoria (1813) in the war of independence which marked the definitive defeat and expulsion of the French. The Church of San Miguel (1181) - must see - is the oldest temple in Vitoria. From your balcony can be seen square all magnitude and beauty and its portico preserved the niche of the Virgen Blanca, patron saint of this city, with a polychromed mid century XIX. Every year on August 4th at 6 in the afternoon, thousands of inhabitants of the city we met here to begin Las Fiestas de la Blanca celebrating the descent of Celedón. With good weather we enjoy on the terraces the bars and taverns of a well-deserved rest savoring some delicious tapas and wonderful wines from Rioja.

  • A great square with amazing architecture and an interesting historical background. There are plenty of restaurants and shops nearby.
  • A very beautiful square! Very lively on Friday evenings and weekends. The place to be for people of all ages . . .
  • It a great place to walk around, check out the little stores, try some food, meet friends and enjoy the weekend. Lot of things to see.
  • This square is the true heart of Vitoria. Local people like to gather here or cross it while walking through the nice pedestrian streets of Vitoria's center.
  • Just about perfect, given the right season.
