Cuevas de Valporquero, Valporquero de Torio

#1 of 23 in Nature in Castile and Leon
Cave Nature / Park
Explore the depths of Cuevas de Valporquero, a breathtaking cave in the hills of León. The open route of the cave takes you through six huge halls, where you’ll admire formations like stalactites and stalagmites. The walk is fairly easy to navigate, so you won’t have to worry about steep climbs, tight squeezes, or slippery stairs. The guides speak Spanish, but brochures in English are offered at the entrance. Take a picnic to eat just outside, where you can enjoy the views of the countryside. • It was a great experience, to descend over 200 meters below ground and see how water created such great architecture was amazing. Wear a jacket, it gets very cold.

  • Great place to visit! Interesting geology total hidden from the world. Well worth the drive up, over 4,000 ft above sea level 1309 m. Allow half a day. Easy parking and coffee at the top. 1 hour 30 minutes for full tour. "Voyage to the center of the world" filmed here. No wonder! Guided tours only at set times. Book ahead in high season.

  • This is to drive through some narrow mountain roads and some steep climbs and very sharp corners. When you get there, many places to park free and the whole attraction is in a mountain bowl. Plenty of picnic tables and shop and restaurant sells readymade filled batons and drinks to take out. Tourist office here. Ticket office for caves here and they will tell you where to go. €6 per adult and you get a mini guide book in English each. No postcards or fridge magnets. Public toilets in location by shop or by cave. Caves themselves were spectacular and have cavernous chambers and water rapids gushing down in places. Stalactites and stalagmites and cave is nicely lit up. Lots of walkways to go up and down and lots of steps. Can only go on tour and the tour is often very short. We arrived bought our tickets and went straight in to join the tour at the start. Think tours are every 30 mins. Tour lasts 1 hour. Open daily in May to September from 10 am to 6 pm. You do get coach loads and they are mostly in morning. We got there at 12: 30 and it was busy but the coach parties were just coming out. This is well worth going to visit and if you are near or in Leon then I thoroughly recommend it.
