Basilica de la Virgen de los Desamparados, Valencia

4.6
For an authentic, beautiful attraction, visit Basilica de la Virgen de los Desamparados and admire the statue and its surroundings. The female figure was constructed in a Gothic style with a Byzantine face and long hair decorated with jewels. This woman is a Catholic apparition attributed to the Virgin Mary, patroness of Valencia, and also one of seven patrons of the autonomous communities of Spain. The statue is set in a lively square in the center of old Valencia. Don’t miss the nearby cathedral and church. This site gets very crowded with tourists. Entering the Baroque 17th century Real Basílica De Nuestra Señora De Los Desamparados, it is the most worth to look up. The frescoes of the vault are impressive paintings of Palomino.  more »

This basilica dedicated to our Lady of the Forsaken, is a little gem right next to the Cathedral. Surveying the ceiling fresco and statue of the Virgin.

Located in the Plaza of Vigen. Beautiful basilica, with some frescoes on the ceiling that are wonderful. On the altar you can admire the Virgen de los Desamparados patroness of Valencia.

  • Particular Church, to central plant with asymmetric dome located right in the main square of Valencia. It's the usual background of all major cultural and religious events that take place in the city. Honestly I found very uninteresting when compared to other churches of Valencia. It's worth visiting because it's right downtown, but you should not have high expectations and above all, you must be aware that if you have little time go anywhere else. @gargio76
  • A lovely place to site see and take it all in with a coffee
  • Fine interior. Entry is free.
  • Another great looking church in the tourist site.
  • Very beautiful church build in the 17th century. It is not very big, but attract with beauty, it is the church for local valencianos. The amount of fresh flowers around the main altar is magnificent, the nice smell from the flowers is divine.

Where to stay in Valencia

The Valencia city center is hugged by a river bed-turned park that leads down to the City of Arts and Sciences and harbor area. Stay along the river to be no more than a pleasant stroll away from some of the main neighborhoods and attractions. The popular El Carmen neighborhood, one of the oldest in the city, is known for its bohemian atmosphere and historical architecture, making it a popular area for daytime tourism and lively nightlife. For a selection of newer hotels and well-known shops, you can opt to stay in the city's commercial district of Colon Street, only a short walk from the old center and well-connected by the metro. For a laid-back, sun-filled retreat, El Cabanyal is a quiet residential neighborhood near the city's main beach.
