Synagogue of Saint Mary the White, Toledo

(3.1/5 based on 1,000+ reviews on the web)
Now a museum, Synagogue of Saint Mary the White features stunning architecture and decor. The interior of this former house of Jewish worship is divided by impressive archways, while the floor is lined with decorative tiles. However, round windows lend the building the typical European look of most synagogues. Small art display and carvings are worth a look. The site can be difficult to find, so be prepared to ask for directions or take a map with you. Be sure to bring your camera. • This national monument was built in the twelfth century as a synagogue by the Moors, hence their interior style similar to the of a mosque. After 20 years it was expropriated and converted into Catholic Church. During a time the building was without religious, becoming successively in barracks and military storage use. After the war Spanish civil was definitely ceded to the Church. Currently functions as a Museum and not is offers cult. A curious fact is that still referring to it as a "synagogue". There are vestiges of Roman times both inside and on the outside (pavement). Visit not to be missed.

  • A temple very beautiful, but completely restored. It is all very well to get an idea of the building. However, the price is rather expensive: € 2.80. It is worth to pay for it.

  • Accurate synagogue, very different to the synagogue of the transit. Outside does not do justice to the beautiful interior but maybe with lack of information practices.

  • It's a church with no Jewish identity. Waste of time. The museum was closed Monday morning. Why? Nobody had an answer. Pathetic for a people who looks for recognition and some connection with the past.
  • The building is beautiful but the place is hugely distressing. It continues to reflect centuries of persecution for the Sephardi Jews by the Catholic church in Spain. It is disgusting that they use the building to evangelise. The building should be given back to the Sephardim.
  • Beautiful Christian Church designed in the Moorish style and built by the Jews of Segovia. This beautiful building serves as a reminder that all of these religions can get along and have gotten along in the past. We can do it again!
  • If you're on a visit of the 3 synagogues (2 here and 1 in Córdoba) then go for it, but the entrance fee to visit a small site with close to no Jewish ornateness (there is no Hebrew), then skip this one and go to the other one.
