Castillo de San Servando, Toledo
(3.8/5 based on 40+ reviews on the web)
Medieval times come alive at Castillo de San Servando, a regional landmark that figured prominently in El Greco's landscape painting "View of Toledo." Originally a Benedictine monastery, the structure became property of the Knights Templar in the 12th century. Templars turned the entire complex into a fortress meant to protect the area against possible Muslim attack, but the structure lost importance during the 14th century. Allegedly haunted by a mischievous knight, the castle remained neglected for several hundred years. Today, the renovated fortress houses a youth hostel, which makes a good base for day trips around the area. • This old castle has been transformed into a bona fide youth hostel with main lounge, dining room (a building apart, downstairs), tv area, snack bar and café and dormitories and semi-private bedrooms. ...  more »
  • If the architecture of this Templar Monastery/fortress on the Tagus seems familiar, it is because it is prominently portrayed in El Greco's masterpiece "Skyline of Toledo" No entry, now a hostel.
  • Like all regiáo, wonderful views from every angle in all distances. This after the river is beautiful!
