Anfiteatro de Tarragona, Tarragona

4.4
#1 of 19 in Historic Sites in Costa Dorada
Ruin Tourist Spot
The site of gladiator battles, wild animal hunts, and executions, Anfiteatro de Tarragona gives you a feel for the history of the Roman empire in Catalonia as of the second century CE. Once able to accommodate up to 15,000 spectators, this amphitheater was later home to a church and a prison. Consider the ticket allowing entrance to five different sites, including this one. If time is short, you can walk the perimeter for free. To visit Anfiteatro de Tarragona and other attractions in Tarragona, use our Tarragona tour planner.

  • Nice attraction to which takes little time, theres a cafe bar patio above it makes for a good stop for cold beer and little site seeing.  more »
  • This was really cool. We have been wanting to see a amphitheater for some time. The setting of the blue and turquoise Mediterranean Sea as a backdrop made it extra special! A beautiful destination wit...  more »

  • Wonderful history with great view of the sea. Worth the entry fee. Be prepared if arriving on a weekday when the weather turns nice to see LOTS of school tours!
  • Excellently restored Roman ruins, visitors are able to go down into the Amphitheatre. Great cafes nearby with lovely ocean views.
  • Was raining when visiting however it is quite nice that you can see the entire amfiteatre for free from the nearby park.
  • Something out of the movies. You can pay to have a closer look, but its spectacular from the outside already. The park around it has free entrance. When you walk downwards to the beach the curved street, you have the best overall look onto the arena. In summer there are many events to attend, even with reenactment of gladiators fighting.
  • The Romans knew where to put amphitheaters. Sea views and history. Fabulous.
