Church of La Caridad, Seville

4.4
Church of La Caridad is a chapel that serves as both a religious site and a functioning hospital, providing social and medical care to some of Seville's elderly poor. Walk through the courtyard of the church, where you can appreciate the Tuscan columns and arches decorated with tiles depicting biblical scenes. There are marble fountain sculptures near the church's entrance. Inside, you will see paintings by Murillo and Valdes Leal covering the walls, as well as arches and domes decorated in Baroque style and extensive plasterwork. Make sure to take in the main altarpiece, decorated in gold and polychrome, with an array of sculptures and columns. • Located between the Cathedral and the River, a stone's throw from the Torre del Oro, the Hospital de la Caridad is one of the cultural highlights of Seville. Big thanks to the legendary nobleman Don Miguel Mañara (of whom is claimed that is Don Giovanni or Don Juan, but that is very unlikely), it is still always a shelter home for the elderly where history, however, the highest floor-thanks to the wonderful courtyard and the magnificent Baroque church. Admire the Delft blue wall mosaics with their inscriptions in Dutch and the astonishing paintings by Murillo and Valdés Leal in the richly decorated Church. Unlike most sights in Seville you here not to stand in line, and there are always a few friendly attendants around those with pleasure their historical tidbits. Nice souvenir shop with interesting documentation on the building and Don Miguel.

  • Is the most beautiful treasure of the Hospltal. Positioned behind the Teatro de La Maestranza a short walk from the Bullring. Striking for its wealth of ornaments and paintings by Murillo.

  • The beautiful baroque church is part of a larger complex, the Hospital de la Caridad, founded in 1674 by Don Miguel Mañara, is a welfare institution since and is used even today as elderly and nursing home.

  • It is a jewel of Sevillian art unknown even to many of them. In his church there is one of the largest collections of paintings by Murillo, being the only preserved original instead, being able to see its full iconographic program. Also amazing the aftermath of Valdés Leal paintings.

Where to stay in Seville

Seville's flat, grid-like city center makes it one of Spain's most walkable cities. While no part of the center is more than a 15-minute walk away, you might enjoy staying on one of the many picturesque cobblestone streets leading off from the famous Cathedral in Plaza España. Boutique hotels and historical apartment rentals intermix with the old quarter's tapa bars and Andalusian storefronts. Nearby, Barrio Santa Cruz is a bit quieter than the main plaza but still boasts the city's sought-after old-world charm. Across the river is the Triana neighborhood, where a lack of heavy tourism has preserved the strong local scene in this mainly residential area full of traditional restaurants and corner bars.
