Basílica de la Macarena, Seville

4.4
#7 of 37 in Historic Sites in Seville
Religious Site Tourist Spot
As the home of the famous 17th-century Virgin of Hope wooden statue, Basílica de la Macarena draws its fair share of visitors. Most come for the morning procession on Good Friday--the largest of its kind in Spain--but you can view the statue any time of year. Once inside the Neobaroque church, head to the main altar to see the statue. It sits surrounded by silver and gold with a small display of pictures and artifacts that show the statue’s significance to Holy Week. La Macarena is revered highly by Sevillanos, so don’t be surprised if locals try to push you toward the exits during mass. With our world travel planner, Seville attractions like Basílica de la Macarena can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

Where to stay in Seville

Seville's flat, grid-like city center makes it one of Spain's most walkable cities. While no part of the center is more than a 15-minute walk away, you might enjoy staying on one of the many picturesque cobblestone streets leading off from the famous Cathedral in Plaza España. Boutique hotels and historical apartment rentals intermix with the old quarter's tapa bars and Andalusian storefronts. Nearby, Barrio Santa Cruz is a bit quieter than the main plaza but still boasts the city's sought-after old-world charm. Across the river is the Triana neighborhood, where a lack of heavy tourism has preserved the strong local scene in this mainly residential area full of traditional restaurants and corner bars.

  • Beautiful! Make sure you turn your camera's flash off, take your hats off & turn your phone on silent. Be respectful of what this Holy place represents for people & those who are there. A little bit away from the main tourist area, but well worth the visit.
  • A small Basilica housing the Macarena. Beautiful in all ways. Try to visit 10 min b4 the mass (eg 7pm)...you get to see the full glory of the Macarena n the altar with the lights turned on. Makes up for no photo taking allowed in the church.
  • Beautiful. The jeweled Virgin over the Main altar is amazing and the story behind her is really interesting.
  • Beautiful basilica
