Basílica de la Macarena, Seville

4.4
As the home of the famous 17th-century Virgin of Hope wooden statue, Basílica de la Macarena draws its fair share of visitors. Most come for the morning procession on Good Friday--the largest of its kind in Spain--but you can view the statue any time of year. Once inside the Neobaroque church, head to the main altar to see the statue. It sits surrounded by silver and gold with a small display of pictures and artifacts that show the statue’s significance to Holy Week. La Macarena is revered highly by Sevillanos, so don’t be surprised if locals try to push you toward the exits during mass. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Seville holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Basílica de la Macarena and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • We have been in the Basilica and it is very nice. To see the Macarena has been impressive. Then we went to his shop and Museum. You can't go in Seville without seeing it.

  • When we arrived we crossed this attractive Arch of color yellow had a marriage, we hope among the people haciensose photos to get. The basilica is small but full of magic, the Virgin of the Esperanza "macareno" is really beautiful, you can access his dressing room by stairs on the left side of the main altarpiece and get photos although this very well guarded, has a Crown of gold and diamonds and the Gold Medal of the city of Sevilla.Emociona, feels peace!

  • Beautiful basilica, very charming. It is located in an area of Seville: Macarena. Not very big but inside is truly spectacular, with gilt decoration, one is impressed. From the outside it doesn't look like this but actually inside is really very nice. I recommend it, the entrance is free

  • It's beautiful. If in Seville you must visit about 20 Catholic churches to enjoy the beauty they hold.
  • Beautiful! Make sure you turn your camera's flash off, take your hats off & turn your phone on silent. Be respectful of what this Holy place represents for people & those who are there. A little bit away from the main tourist area, but well worth the visit.
  • A small Basilica housing the Macarena. Beautiful in all ways. Try to visit 10 min b4 the mass (eg 7pm)...you get to see the full glory of the Macarena n the altar with the lights turned on. Makes up for no photo taking allowed in the church.
  • Pretty church with lots of history
  • Great golden interior.

Where to stay in Seville

Seville's flat, grid-like city center makes it one of Spain's most walkable cities. While no part of the center is more than a 15-minute walk away, you might enjoy staying on one of the many picturesque cobblestone streets leading off from the famous Cathedral in Plaza España. Boutique hotels and historical apartment rentals intermix with the old quarter's tapa bars and Andalusian storefronts. Nearby, Barrio Santa Cruz is a bit quieter than the main plaza but still boasts the city's sought-after old-world charm. Across the river is the Triana neighborhood, where a lack of heavy tourism has preserved the strong local scene in this mainly residential area full of traditional restaurants and corner bars.
