Iglesia de la Vera Cruz, Segovia

4.5
#2 of 10 in Historic Sites in Segovia
Religious Site Historic Site
Built by the Knights Templar to house a piece of the True Cross, or the cross that Jesus was crucified on, Iglesia de la Vera Cruz was constructed to be a shrine. However, the fragment of the cross didn't stay in the structure long: it's currently located in a village church nearby. The shrine now stands as a historical curiosity, distinguished by 12 walls whose geometric shape is broken only by a tower on the south side. Visit the lookout point near the Alcazar, a Moorish palace in Seville, to get the best perspective on the structure. Inside the shrine is a two-story gallery where the Knights Templar may have kept vigil over the piece of wood. Climb the tower for another view, this time of the Alcazar. • Apparently modeled after the Church of the Holy Selpuchre in Jerusalem. Its a bit of a walk from the Alcazar, but definitely an interesting visit for those with a passion for religious buildings.  more »
  • Fantastic church from the 1200s - One of only a few such churches that remain in the world. Great architecture and brilliant piece of the past, in a really well preserved and unaltered state.  more »
  • If you are lucky enough to be in Segovia do yourself a favor and stop in at the Iglesia de la Vera Cruz. It's a unique structure and offers some great views of the Alcazar from below.  more »

  • Visit mandatory if you like history and architecture. Its atypical shape and its strange location (isolated in an inhospitable place), has always drawn attention, especially to people interested in esoteric subjects. One of the curiosities of this church is that everyone says it has an octagonal... and it is twelve-sided: not has eight but twelve sides. It is a dodecagon with three apses cylindrical townhouses, a sacristy also cylindrical and a square Tower. Its most direct model is the Church of the Holy sepulcher of Jerusalem: both in form and function; This church was not built to be parish church or monastic Chapel: it is rather a sanctuary... or more specifically, what is called a "martyrium": a temple dedicated to evoke the death and resurrection of Christ.

  • The temple was dedicated September 13, 1208, as attested by the tombstone that is opposite the side door in the temple. In the year 1531, and as a result of the unification of the order of the Holy Sepulchre with the order of St. John of Jerusalem he became dependent on the sovereign order military and Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta. Beautiful girl.
