Iglesia de la Vera Cruz, Segovia

4.5
#3 of 19 in Historic Sites in Segovia
Built by the Knights Templar to house a piece of the True Cross, or the cross that Jesus was crucified on, Iglesia de la Vera Cruz was constructed to be a shrine. However, the fragment of the cross didn't stay in the structure long: it's currently located in a village church nearby. The shrine now stands as a historical curiosity, distinguished by 12 walls whose geometric shape is broken only by a tower on the south side. Visit the lookout point near the Alcazar, a Moorish palace in Seville, to get the best perspective on the structure. Inside the shrine is a two-story gallery where the Knights Templar may have kept vigil over the piece of wood. Climb the tower for another view, this time of the Alcazar. • Beautiful church which has a real atmosphere to it, based on the Holy Sepulchure and built by the Templars it's not a church in the conventional sense. I combined the visit with a walk back to Segovia...  more »
  • Outside the walls of the old city of Segovia, this dodecagonal building, probably inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, is widely awarded cross of Malta (heir of the Templars who were founders of the sanctuary). A small gallery-pillar Central, raised and equipped with loopholes to imagine the scenario of a last Knight soldier defending a piece of the true cross, which the relic would have given its name to the Church!

  • Church built in the likeness of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, visiting as many monuments in it costs and if you take a day of sightseeing the sum starts to be excessive, that if its location there is an excellent view of the Alcázar. take advantage of an excellent photography.

  • Exceptional monument. Problems arise by the lack of reliable information on opening hours. Admission fee is EUR 2 per person. Bring change (bills over EUR 20 are not admitted). Personnel is rough and unwelcoming.
  • Many people view the Church far away from the old town, there is a pedestrian path that lowers the Alcázar to the Church in less than 10 minutes, and the truth is that it is worth that is very nice and is very well preserved, others from your door you can see another beautiful perspe the city will.

  • * eng: Church of the true cross, north of Segovia. Formerly known as Holy Sepulcher and attributed to the Templars. It is thought to have been founded by the Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, at the beginning of the thirteenth century (1208). Romanesque style, already in transition to Gothic, consists of a dodecagonal plant with three apses, a semicircular sacristy and a square-shaped tower. This type of centralized plant finds its precedent in the paleocristians martyria and is popularized as a result of the construction of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem (4th century). Its state of conservation is relatively good, although the stone deterioration is quite noteworthy. -Visiting hours: Autumn-Winter: From 10.30 to 13.30 and from 3.30 to 6.00 pm. In Spring-Summer: From 10.30 to 13.30 and from 15.30 to 19.00. Closed on Mondays and in November. * esp: Church of Vera Cruz, in the North of Segovia. • Although it is far from the old town, just down the road that must travel up to it (you can walk perfectly) it is worth. This church has always been surrounded by mystery and the esoteric enthusiasts tend to visit it regularly. Unfortunately already not you can climb to the Tower, but it is still a very interesting visit. For my taste, in addition, its main façade is undoubtedly the perfect place to make the best photo to the Alcázar.
