  • Built on the 14th-century wall, it closes the square on its north side, its central axis being the only gateway to the city that has arrived to our day. It is a Baroque style building, rectangular plan with two heights. Especially the central body with a richly decorated half-point arch that gives way to the gate of the mentioned wall. The main floor has, under a very ornate frieze, two fenced holes joined by a balcony. All this is topped with a swordsman in a higher body that presents the Bourbon shield on which appears a pediment topped by a sculpture of the goddess Fama. Escorting the ensemble, you can see two small finishes that support the city's shields.

  • It is the main square of the city and is located behind the Cathedral. Unlike other major squares, it does not occupy a central place in the urban center of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. On the contrary it is located to the North, bordering the extra-radio, in particular with the Paseo de la Carrera or Haro road. An explanation to this fact is attributed to the fact that the Plaza Mayor originating in the city was not this one, but what we currently call Plaza del Santo since in the origins of the burg there were concentrated the most important institutions of the city; pilgrims' hospital, the origin of the city; the Cathedral and finally the Council's outbuildings with his prison. The present Plaza de España was in medieval times the place that, outside the walls, was used to establish a market in the village. After the extension of the walled fence in 1367, this large place would be intramural and therefore protected. With the installation at the end of the sixteenth century of the pometo or alhóndiga begins a new era that will lead to this square to become the new administrative center of the city.
