Monte do Gozo, Santiago de Compostela

3.3
#3 of 19 in Historic Sites in Santiago de Compostela
Monte do Gozo, or Hill of Joy, is the hill where pilgrims on the Way of St. James catch the first glimpse of their destination, the Cathedral of Santiago. Statues of pilgrims pointing the way stand at the top of the hill, inviting you to take a photo with them. There's an albergue, or hostel, for pilgrims wishing to rest before making the final leg of their journey to the cathedral. There's a small church here, as well as a few coffee shops where you can grab refreshments to enjoy with your view. • Spain sightseeing first visited first and foremost. As you have heard, the statue outside does nothing. Christian or not and either say to me of no religion, inspiring thin. Seem far away for pilgrims who have walked thousands of miles/km, three-spired thrilled "look over there", as last walking in I then imagined.

  • For those who have walked the path reach del monte do Gozo means you are in the last stage of a personal, religious, sports path of great importance. It means to leave to one side, the days of burning sun, rain, cold and even snow. It is put aside the bodily pain, forget the times that one asked that I do here, from Mount Santiago there are just twenty miles and hope the rest and embrace the Holy. Unfortunately, the road has crowded and is losing spiritual part to the detriment of the sport, the playful. It is cosificando with the risk that this entails. Jan del monte do Gozo this feeling is visible. It is punished, dirty, with low maintenance and insufficient care by all. A pity if we take into account that the road is a cultural route of first European order.

  • On top of the hill overlooking Santiago, great views. Monument is outstanding and lovely the way the sun shines through the glass cross on top. Wonderful.
  • This was the location of the first international world youth day. Monument to Pope John Paul II and his legacy. Park is sparce and poorly maintained.
  • A lovely place with amazing views. You can just stop for a break on the Camino, or go here for a picnic. Only problem is that there are no public toilets. But there are several cafes in the village.
  • Cool experience for everyone coming to Santiago from the Camino. The sculpture and the view are inspiring. So is the growing crowd of pilgrims making their way into the city.
  • Top of Mount do Gozo. First view of Santiago de Compostela with a rather ugly memorial. Don't miss to visit the beautiful chapel right before you leave this place!

Where to stay in Santiago de Compostela

Lodging in the city's old district is the most scenic option. Some hotels even offer rooms in renovated historical buildings near the cathedral. Consider a stay in Monte do Gozo, a small town just outside the city that offers 2,000 beds to weary pilgrims.
