Monte do Gozo, Santiago de Compostela

3.2
#3 of 19 in Historic Sites in Santiago de Compostela
Monte do Gozo, or Hill of Joy, is the hill where pilgrims on the Way of St. James catch the first glimpse of their destination, the Cathedral of Santiago. Statues of pilgrims pointing the way stand at the top of the hill, inviting you to take a photo with them. There's an albergue, or hostel, for pilgrims wishing to rest before making the final leg of their journey to the cathedral. There's a small church here, as well as a few coffee shops where you can grab refreshments to enjoy with your view. • It is one of the meeting points for the pilgrims of Santiago. It is full of good vibe and you get beautiful views of the city.

  • This natural space is one of the most traditional meeting point for pilgrims. It is a place to visit and to have as a souvenir.

  • I honestly do not understand the meaning of backpacker facilities, probably the Guide could help us, but alas. .. And you can get here only by transport, spend time to spend 10-15 minutes.

  • On top of the hill overlooking Santiago, great views. Monument is outstanding and lovely the way the sun shines through the glass cross on top. Wonderful.
  • This was the location of the first international world youth day. Monument to Pope John Paul II and his legacy. Park is sparce and poorly maintained.
  • A lovely place with amazing views. You can just stop for a break on the Camino, or go here for a picnic. Only problem is that there are no public toilets. But there are several cafes in the village.
  • Cool experience for everyone coming to Santiago from the Camino. The sculpture and the view are inspiring. So is the growing crowd of pilgrims making their way into the city.
  • Top of Mount do Gozo. First view of Santiago de Compostela with a rather ugly memorial. Don't miss to visit the beautiful chapel right before you leave this place!

Where to stay in Santiago de Compostela

Lodging in the city's old district is the most scenic option. Some hotels even offer rooms in renovated historical buildings near the cathedral. Consider a stay in Monte do Gozo, a small town just outside the city that offers 2,000 beds to weary pilgrims.
