Monte do Gozo, Santiago de Compostela

3.2
#3 of 7 in Historic Sites in Santiago de Compostela
Historic Walking Area Tourist Spot
Monte do Gozo, or Hill of Joy, is the hill where pilgrims on the Way of St. James catch the first glimpse of their destination, the Cathedral of Santiago. Statues of pilgrims pointing the way stand at the top of the hill, inviting you to take a photo with them. There's an albergue, or hostel, for pilgrims wishing to rest before making the final leg of their journey to the cathedral. There's a small church here, as well as a few coffee shops where you can grab refreshments to enjoy with your view. • Cool experience for everyone coming to Santiago from the Camino. The sculpture and the view are inspiring. So is the growing crowd of pilgrims making their way into the city.
  • A lovely place with amazing views. You can just stop for a break on the Camino, or go here for a picnic. Only problem is that there are no public toilets. But there are several cafes in the village.
  • It is the best for those walking the Camino
  • Last step in the Camino. Good views from here. There is a fountain if you need water for the last 2km.
  • A spectacular end to the tour on the Camino

Where to stay in Santiago de Compostela

Lodging in the city's old district is the most scenic option. Some hotels even offer rooms in renovated historical buildings near the cathedral. Consider a stay in Monte do Gozo, a small town just outside the city that offers 2,000 beds to weary pilgrims.
