Hostal dos Reis Católicos, Santiago de Compostela

The Hostal dos Reis Católicos, also called the Hotel de Los Reyes Católicos or Parador de Santiago, is a 5-star Parador hotel, located in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain. The hotel was constructed as a religious work in 1486, by Ferdinand and Isabel, the Catholic Monarchs. It is widely considered the oldest continuously operating hotel in the world, and has also been called the "most beautiful hotel in Europe"The Pilgrimage TrailThe Hostal dos Reis Católicos sits at the very end of famous pilgrimage trail, the Way of St. James, next to the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral.Pilgrims from all over Europe, throughout the Middle Ages, both rich and poor, followed the Way of St. James, and arrived in Santiago de Compostela. In the late 15th century Ferdinand and Isabel themselves completed the pilgrimage across northern Spain. As a sign of their religious piety, and their growing economic and political might, they began a program to improve the infrastructure and support services on the pilgrimage trail in Spain. They built new hostels, bridges, churches, and public wells. The most improvement project by Isabel and Ferdinand was the Hostal, right next to the great cathedral at the very end of the pilgrimage trail. The Hostal de los Reyes Catolicos served as a hospice and a hospital, where pilgrims could recover and rejuvenate after completing the pilgrimage. The Hostal had a multi-lingual staff of doctors, nurses, and priests on call 24 hours a day; and provided all services free of charge. Pilgrims were allowed to recover at the Hostal for 3 days in the Summer, and 5 days in the Winter.

On the occasion of my journey, arrived in Santiago, I decide to book this hostel while remaining somewhat disappointed, partly because of the distance from the center of Santiago, but above all for its site looks much better, taking into account its value and price.

First of all say that I am friend of paradores, secondly that at that moment I was housed. The parador is a highly recommended place for everyone, at the time that you spend the doors you moved as if it were a machine from time to time of the Kings. But I am going to tell you that it happened to me and because I felt very humiliated. On August 16 in the Royal Chapel had a Compostela music concert, the concert began at 20:00 h. My family and I went to take place at 19:30 in the dossier is written free entry till full House, arriving there were none. People started to arrive and take their places. Arriving the Secretariat for organizing the event, made all those who were in the first two rows will be lifted (she arrived 15 minutes before the start). Us us were sitting at the end, at no time, he told us nothing. Therefore we were quiet. One minute before kicking off the show, the Ministry of music in Compostela, comes to tell us that theirs are reserved. It makes us get up because they have become known for her people. We raise us saying that it is not fair, but your reply. They are teachers! After twenty minutes of the start, people who had sat up letting the three days off. And now I leave by way of reflection. Was so important letting the site? You have humiliated a greeting and think that people who you've raised...

  • Great place to stop for a drink. A little more pricey, but the history is worth it. Wander around and enjoy the architecture.
  • I've been to seven hotels in Spain so far and this was by far the best! The rooms are beautiful and the bathrooms are modern and well equipped. The restaurant is amazing and the food and staff are great
  • We had lunch and it was almost perfect. We had the gastronomic menu and like everything except the Rabo de toro.
  • A fantastic place to stay in Santiago de Compostela. As it's a Parador the rates are more reasonable and the interior of the hotel really showcases the extensive history of the building with some very romantic inner courtyards within the building itself.
  • We stopped here for drinks and snacks after visiting the Cathedral. We were served in an inner courtyard with tables in the shade. It was a welcome respite on a hot and sunny day.

Where to stay in Santiago de Compostela

Lodging in the city's old district is the most scenic option. Some hotels even offer rooms in renovated historical buildings near the cathedral. Consider a stay in Monte do Gozo, a small town just outside the city that offers 2,000 beds to weary pilgrims.
