Palacio de La Magdalena, Santander

4.4
A former seasonal residence of the Spanish royal family, Palacio de La Magdalena contains numerous fine paintings by Spanish painters and offers vistas out onto the sea from the top of the Magdalena Peninsula. The best way to see the 20th-century palace is on a tour. The reception rooms in particular impress, and note the the curiously designed student dormitories--which were originally stables--built in a medieval English style. Take a moment to greet the penguins and seals in the small marine enclosure near the entrance. To visit Palacio de La Magdalena on your trip to Santander, use our Santander trip app .

  • The site is beautiful. With children it is nice, because you have a mini zoo, a playground, beaches, boats, and the gardens surrounding the Palace. The train is silly but if you go with children is fun, you have a bit of history. A very nice place to spend the morning or day.

  • A beautiful place. It's a must see tourist spot. It has a fantastic view of the sea. What was really interesting was that it has enclosures where we could see and appreciate real sealions and penguins up close. Ancient interesting ships are on display and there's a beautiful sculpture of a mermaid. The gardens are naturally beautiful. Don't leave Santander without visiting this palace.
  • A must see! Save 45min to 1h for this small peninsula. There are nice beaches too, so you could spend an entire day there.
  • Palace is only open on weekends from 10-12. Exterior is nice, some nice views on the sea and towns around. Sea lions and penguins in small pools.
  • If you don't speak Spanish, most of the tour will go right past you. You'll get to visit 4 rooms in the palace. The building is a century old and not too impressive. The exterior and the peninsula are great.
  • If you visit Santander you must visit this castle. PERFECT LOCATION!!!! BEST VIEW😊From Pikio park you can get by foot it will take only 5 to 10 min.

Where to stay in Santander

For views over the water and a wide selection of restaurants, consider staying near the Puerto Chico, or "little port," area. Lodging on the historical Camino de Santiago en Santander street puts you in the path of many of the city's walking tours. The streets that jut off Alameda de Oviedo are full of markets, cafes, and shops that put you in the middle of activity.
