  • Piquío gardens are one of the most beautiful parks of Santander for me, my favorite, for its design, its views and its corners. I have delighted me in it countless times with my camera. In full heart of the Sardinero, were created in the years 20 of the century past. They are on a rocky ledge that juts into the sea and separates the first of the second beach of el Sardinero. It is home to what many santanderinos call the rose of the winds but it really is a powerful astronomical instrument called a parallel Earth. It consists of an area of limestone, 65 cm diameter, carved out of a single piece. The oceans, continents and reference lines by setting the map of the world are represented in it. In the continents stone is polished and painted in brown gold-coated. In the oceans, on the other hand, the stone is chipped (i.e., marked with small dimples), polychrome, and to a level slightly lowered on all continents. The reference lines (Ecuador, tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic circle and Antarctic, meridians each 15 ° and the ecliptic with the Zodiac symbols) are embossed on the oceans and in low relief on the continents, so they have always been visible, even in times in which the painting had virtually disappeared. It best is its accuracy, ojito: it sphere is oriented so its axis North-South match with it address North-South true (it Peninsula Iberian is located in it part top of it sphere), it makes that its axis polar is parallel to the of it land. It is located on a mosaic on the floor representing a compass rose, which designates sixteen directions, although the orientation of this does not respond exactly to the true North, but rather to the magnetic north, that when it was built this monument it differed from the true North more now. This allows that, during daylight hours, the ball receives the same solar lighting to real earth, form the places where "day" and "night" in the ball (i.e., its illuminated half and half in shadow) correspond exactly to the places where it is day and night on the real earth. Also works as clock of Sun spherical, marking the hour solar not a rod or gnomon, but the terminator (border between the light and the shadow) on them marks time recorded in the Ecuador. Not is known it date accurate of its construction, that has of be around 1925, when is built them gardens of Piquio, work of the architect Ramiro Saiz Martinez. Its design is due to Eugenio Cortiguera, Aviator and designer, while the material realization of the monument was carried out by the sculptor and stonemason Saturnino Merodio. There were other two copies of this ball in Santander, which has not been preserved, and another that was sent to St. Louis (Missouri, USA)

  • It is a beautiful place, glad to walk through the gardens and enjoy the views as the Magdalena Beach and continue until you reach the two beaches of el Sardinero, never forget that ride, and if you manage to sit "facing the sea" already is the best. God! that Nice is SANTANDER

  • The Piquío gardens are located between the first and the second beach of el Sardinero. It has excellent views and in it is the parallel Earth. It is a stone sphere that simulates the Earth and have the same orientation in space. I.e., that its axis coincides with the real of Earth. He has represented the world map, meridians, and a band in ecuador with the solar hours. Observing her sunny days you can learn a lot of things. For example: the area of the sphere which receives light corresponds to the area of the world where it's day at that time. The part of the ball where there is shadow matches the part of the world where it is night. The transition between light and shadow occurs in the dawn and the dusk. It is also a solar clock.
