Plaza de Espana, Santa Cruz de Tenerife

(3.4/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
Built in 1929 to replace a 16th-century fortress, Plaza de Espana serves today as the principal square of the Canary Islands. Surrounded by ornate government buildings and other plazas, and centered upon a giant manmade lake, the square lies directly in the center of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Admire the plaza’s mountain-ringed backdrop and its monument to the fallen soldiers of the Spanish Civil War. Grab a coffee or a drink at one of the plentiful cafes, or sit down for a meal at one of the surrounding restaurants serving traditional Canary Island seafood. History buffs can visit an underground display providing history and artifacts from the Castillo de San Cristobal that once stood here. • A nice pool in the middle of a square. It's a nice walk from the center of the city, nothing special but worth a look.  more »

  • Local guide to my question why there is no water on the square responded-there is a version that is linked with politics and demonstrations. Spanish hot people with revolutionary tendencies and they love to organize strikes and rallies. If the authorities come to know about something similar, upcoming-quickly fill in the main square of the island with water and thus deprived of "rioters" venue for the rally.
