  • A very Spanish city with only a few tacky tourist shops . Otherwise very Spanish. A very pleasant walk to look at the fabulous historic balconies and bespoke shops. Worth a visit!  more »
  • These old houses, mainly of the eighteenth century were especially built by merchants and notables (for more information, see the photos). Today they are part of the heritage of la Palma.

  • Balconies sea Avenue in 1587, Felipe II took the Royal Ordinances on hygiene and privacy, prohibiting spitting, throwing water into the streets, defecating, own animals near dwellings and personal hygiene among many others. But in these Ordinances, there is one that is especially directed to the cities of Granada, Santa Cruz de La Palma, La Laguna and Las Palmas and is the prohibition of building exterior balconies already that these threaten the public land and the intimacy of the Walker. They are the streets Odaly and Pérez de Brito (formerly the Marina Street) today, that this law obliges the disarmament of all types of balconies and is when they start to build the large balconies indoors. Then-aldermen who already ruled on the current City Hall, ignored this law and decided to construct small viewpoints, as the law not contemplated them as balconies. The unique balconies which were saved from being collapsed, were the Avenida Marítima, since it was reported that these had been built as a security for the Moorish pirate attacks posts and that their houses served as defensive walls. This defensive construction design was enacted by Torriani, leaving only some step alleys that were easy to plug in case of attack. The balconies that we see today, began to settle on 1940.
