Trip Planner: Europe / Spain / Catalonia / Province of Barcelona / Santa Coloma de Cervello / Colonia Guell Gaudi Crypt
Located only 20 minutes outside of Barcelona, Colonia Guell Gaudi Crypt is a must-see for fans of Antoni Gaudí, or anyone interested in surreal architecture. Work on the church began in 1890, funded by Count Eusebi de Güell, but his financial problems prevented its completion and only the crypt was finished. Here, Gaudí pioneered many of the techniques he would later use in the Sagrada Familia. He created an inverse model of the church by hanging birdshot from a network of strings, allowing him to discover the correct curvature for the pillars and arches. This allowed him to construct the naves without buttresses or supporting walls. Lose yourself inside the structure, which blends in seamlessly with the surrounding hills. Admire the rough-hewn stone columns and stained glass windows while enjoying the audio tour that comes with your visit. You need to go to the tourist information center first to buy tickets before you can visit the citadel. They cost 7 Euro and are not worth the money. Visit the town Gaudi designed instead, it is for free and gorgeous!
Beautiful Art Nouveau / Modernista crypt by Gaudi. Also walk around town - the school is impressive, and there’s an amazing brick house at 1900 on one of the side streets.
I'm tempted not to mention this place but consider it the most evocative of Gaudi,s work what a wonderful experience after the overcrowded sites within the city. In my opinion the one to visit.
A wonderful place to break your head by observing this incredible architecture of Gaudi...unforgettable
A destination for anyone following the works of Antoni Gaudí. The Cripta Gaudí (Church of Colònia Güell) and the village La Colònia Güell are an experiment by Gaudí's patron and entrepreneur Eusebi Güell. A simple train ride from downtown Barcelona. Spend the day walking around the village and learn a little about this fascinating and forward thinking experiment in a worker owned cooperative. Way ahead of it's time.
