Trip Planner: Europe / Spain / Catalonia / Province of Barcelona / Santa Coloma de Cervello / Colonia Guell Gaudi Crypt
Located only 20 minutes outside of Barcelona, Colonia Guell Gaudi Crypt is a must-see for fans of Antoni Gaudí, or anyone interested in surreal architecture. Work on the church began in 1890, funded by Count Eusebi de Güell, but his financial problems prevented its completion and only the crypt was finished. Here, Gaudí pioneered many of the techniques he would later use in the Sagrada Familia. He created an inverse model of the church by hanging birdshot from a network of strings, allowing him to discover the correct curvature for the pillars and arches. This allowed him to construct the naves without buttresses or supporting walls. Lose yourself inside the structure, which blends in seamlessly with the surrounding hills. Admire the rough-hewn stone columns and stained glass windows while enjoying the audio tour that comes with your visit. Colonia Guell Gaudi Crypt reviews
Being a Gaudi enthusiast is a must do, good to visit before going to Sagrada Familia. Short but nice visit, great building.

I was here 7 years ago. Nothing has changed - in a good way. Time hasn't taken anything away from the quality of the building or the surroundings. The surrounding is now given better care.
This was my first experience with Gaudi’s work. Must say I’m impressed with the level of detail and workmanship. If you have the time please visit!
Beautiful, albeit incomplete Church designed by world famous Catalán architect Gaudi. The biggest mystery is why did Gaudi walk away from the project he created having spent 10 years planning the project for the village including this masterpiece. It was probably because after the founder of the village died Güell, which Gaudi had a fantastic relationship with, Gaudi fell out with his son who did not want to spend the budget Gaudi wanted to compete it.
Pros: - mind blowing architecture - calm atmosphere and nice place overall - affordable tickets Cons: - I think you may need a car to get there - the overall crypt is small and you will finish visiting it under 30 mins Mention: Get a local guide or audio guide while you are visiting it because otherwise the whole experience will be much poorer.
If you love architecture you must go and visit the Crypt. It is small, but is magnificent and, because not to many people go, it is usually quite empty. You can see real design in here, from the columns and the beams, through the furniture, etc. The museum only shows a bit of history, some pictures, etc. Also, please remember you are helping a small community.
