The General Archive of the Spanish Civil War is a specialist archive containing material related to the Spanish Civil War. It is part of Spain's National Historical Archive and is located in Salamanca. The origins of the Civil War Archive, and the decision to house such documents in Salamanca, date back to the 1930s. The Franco regime decreed, on September 13, 1936, that "all properties and documents belonging to the political parties and organizations mentioned, as well as any others that opposed the movimiento nacional, were to become the property of the State." The definition of organizations opposed to the fascist regime was a fairly broad one, as is evidenced by the fact that the archive includes material related to freemasonry; freemasons were one of the groups viewed with suspicion by Franco and membership carried a prison sentence. With the democratisation of Spain, the purpose of the Archive changed. In 2007 the Archive became part of the Historical Memory Documentary Centre created by the Historical Memory Law. "Historical memory", in this context, refers to Spain's coming to terms with its Civil War and the Franco Dictatorship. The Centre includes material from the 1930s to the 1970s.The Archive has a permanent exhibition, open to the public. It has also developed its on-line presence: a portal called the "Portal de Víctimas de la Guerra Civil y Represaliados del Franquismo" is maintained under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. As the name implies, it makes available information regarding victims of the Civil War and the Franco Dictatorship. As some of the victims were refugees, the portal not only draws on Spanish archival material, but also foreign sources, including information about Spanish people held in Nazi concentration camps.

  • It is a curious, free entrance and next to Casa Lis Museum, Freemasonry-related objects can be seen. Not it takes you more than 30 minutes.

  • It is a simple Museum (you can see everything in less than an hour), about the Civil war and Freemasonry. Focusing on the part that I liked, the civil war, the Museum was very basic and small, but very well outlined and very visual (pictures, posters, cards, tobacco, etc.), which is appreciated. Note that the Museum is made so that the two sides are equal and equitable (which seems to me a very delicate and very important topic), so maybe it is not spoken policy, political interests, etc. It is here where missing chicha. As improvement or expansion would be nice, to explain the causes of the war and its history, as the reasons that led to the revolt, talk about some historical novels of real events, about how they lived our relatives that time, was evolving war, Governments of the Republic during the war, what happened to some famous people (Federico García Lorca, Pablo Picasso, Severo Ochoa, Luis Buñuel, Miguel Hernández, etc), and even to pay tribute to all persons deceased as a result of the war, regardless of their political position. In short, the Museum is very nice, but small. Highly recommended.

  • I recommend visiting this museum if you spare time during the visit to Salamanca, but I do not recommend it to those who will caught in time, there are only pictures... free... input cuts. Opening hours from Monday to Saturday, closed on Sundays. Normalito Museum we expected something else so passionate about us history.

  • One of the many interesting places to visit in Salamanca.
  • The intention is good and it is free, but the word Museum is a little big. Just a couple of rooms and most material scanned. Expected me something else.

  • A file that must be maintained to not return to that situation. The room of the Freemasons is fantastic. By the way free.
