  • Don Miguel de Unamuno was without a doubt the most remarkable rector that the University of Salamanca has ever had. He was by his great intellectual and perhaps above all moral weight-in times that in Salamanca Spain and a great need for such people. He was twice rector, and was fired from that post twice. The first time in 1914 because he is against the Government. He was then banished to Fuerteventura where he spent six years without his wife and nine children. Rehabilitation after he had gotten into the beginning of the 30 's (by the anti-fascist Republican government) he was again rector-to the fascist rig seized power and he protested against this hard. Dictator Franco put him from his post and not long after he died. All this and more can be found in the House where he lived during his first Rectorate. We were lucky and got a private tour of the very knowledgeable and very involved Guide. For us an experience that brought closer the troubled Spain.
