Arco de Triunfo de Bara, Roda de Bara

The Arc de Berà is a triumphal arch some 20 km north-east of the city of Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain, close to Roda de Barà. This monument is part of the Archaeological Ensemble of Tarraco, which was added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 2000. It stands on the line of what was the Via Augusta, now the N-340 road. Its name derives from the count Berà. It is a triumphal arch with a single opening consisting of a central body on a podium, decorated with fluted pilasters crowned by Corinthian capitals. The upper part of the construction is an entablature made up of architrave, frieze and cornice. The stone used is probably from a local quarry. The monument was built as a result of the will of Lucius Licinius Sura and it was erected in the reign of Augustus, around 13 BCE. The surviving inscription reads: “Ex testamento L Licini L f Serg Surae consa”. It is thought it was dedicated to Augustus or to his genius, and that it marked the limit of the district of Tarraco.

This arch is in the middle of the road and it's more of a roundabout than a monument. Visually lovely but not really worth stopping to see.  more »

Nice old Ascot. Impossible to miss as it is on a roundabout on the highway that goes on Tarragona. We went to the foot. Very dangerous to cross the wide national on both sides. We can't go up there.

Logically, everything is you can spend the time you want, but in this case one can make the really short visit. The arch that was part of the Via Augusta to perfection can be seen without leaving the national 340. In fact, not long ago, was passed even by its interior. But such recklessness is not required, during the civil war already put it enough to test. You could stand to the side and see it better, but when you are near you usually go with haste and queues. Let yourself impress. It will be enough.

  • You can see the drive, but it is worth crossing the N-340, to see a Roman monument of the 1st century BC

  • Roman construction worth watching. Who wants to improve the access requested it to City Hall.

  • Restored, damaged during the Civil War. Currently in exel State entity. Worth losing a few minutes and dreaming about that time.

  • The Arch of Bara, (in catalan Arc of Bera, which would derive from the name of the count Bera), is a triumphal arch built by the Romans about 20 kilometres north-east of Tarragona (Spain), in the village of Roda de Barà. The Arch of Bara is one of the elements of the «archaeological ensemble of Tarraco», declared world heritage by Unesco, being identified the tower with 875-014 code.
