cueva del castillo features the oldest known cave art in Europe, dating back some 40,000 years. An entrance to the cavern that was unavailable in Paleolithic times today gives tourists comfortable access to the cave interior. Nearly 300 drawn figures, of both animals, such as mammoths, and people, decorate the cave walls. This attraction does close for the afternoon siesta. Spectacular caves... and incredible paintings. All of this is enhanced by the excellent explanation of our guide (Susa, I think it is called). 45 incredible minutes and made short. Children even breathed when they gave the explanations. You can't go to the pasiegos valleys without visiting these caves.

This is a truly amazing tour - the guide was lovely very very informative and when she realised we were English took the time to explain each part which was very kind. These paintings are the oldest i... more »
This is the real deal! Paintings up to 40,000 years old. The guides were great and the groups they let into the caves are small - so definitely book online in summer months. It feels very special and a great price at 3 euros per cave. Both caves have their merit although the first one has more paintings. The guides also spoke very favorably of the Altamira site, although there you can only see a replica. Highly recommended to come here.
The caves preserve an important part of human history, and are a revelation. The guides try their best to accommodate you in English, even though the tour doesn't specify it. Probably worth combining it with the other caves a few hundred metres walk away, we couldn't as well were late. Best to book online beforehand, especially in peak season. We were lucky enough just to get the last spots on the your we took. Will be going back to some of the other caves, to explore the at of our pre historic humans, and also to observe the caves, as they are just amazing on their own. For a guided tour, the cost is only 3 euros, certain sections of the caves are closed off for preservation, but many of the caves are digitised online, and in some of the books available at the gift shop.
Excellent guided visit, with good explanation in Spanish. I hope for the sake of foreign visitors that they offer tours in English in the high season. This was not the case today in April. The site is of great archeological importance as the Abri at the entrance was occupied by our predecessor, represented in 14 distinct historical layers. Some of the artwork in the cave goes back more than 40,000 years!
Wonderful experience to be in front of these original cave drawings going back even 40000 years ago! Good visit. Not crowded.
To see these 40000! YEARS old original pictures is a unique sensational adventure!!!
