Vizcaya Bridge, Province of Vizcaya
Categories: Bridges, Tourist Spots
Often referred to as Vizcaya Bridge, this is the world's oldest transport bridge, built in 1893. Constructed to connect two towns on opposite banks without disrupting the traffic on the Ibaizabal River, it has successfully performed this service since its opening, with only one four-year interruption, during the Spanish Civil War. The bridge is the only Basque monument on UNESCO's World Heritage Site list, and the only industrial heritage site in Spain. Can really recommend seeing if you are visiting Bilbao. The view is stunning, and if you get a ticket for walking over, you also get to take the gondola back (in short you can pass it both ways). It is worth noting that the information posts along the walkway on the top seem to be ordered chronologically from the Getxo side to the Portugalete side. A good way to get here is to take the metro from Bilbao.
What a bridge ! Never seen anything like it . Great engineering. We caught the lift to the top and walked a cross it . Views are great ! Must take your camera , brilliant views .
There are some human build construction that you must see. This is one of them. This bridge shows how creativly you can approach people transport.
Historical "hanging bridge" that will carry you over the river. A beautiful anachronism
