Vizcaya Bridge, Province of Vizcaya

(4.6/5 based on 800 reviews on the web)
Often referred to as Vizcaya Bridge, this is the world's oldest transport bridge, built in 1893. Constructed to connect two towns on opposite banks without disrupting the traffic on the Ibaizabal River, it has successfully performed this service since its opening, with only one four-year interruption, during the Spanish Civil War. The bridge is the only Basque monument on UNESCO's World Heritage Site list, and the only industrial heritage site in Spain. Make Vizcaya Bridge part of your personalized Portugalete itinerary using our Portugalete holiday planner.

  • it will be a pity to miss this piece of engineering, is located in las arenas a very residential area worth pay a visit  more »
  • Close to Bilbao by metro you can visit and walk in the sand or Portugalete. In a sunny day you can enjoy walking near the suspension bridge or "hanging bridge" as it is known in the region. It is wonderful in both sides of the banks of the river and views and pictures are really beautiful. Close to Bilbao Metro. You can go in either of the two lines, the sands on the right bank of the estuary or Portugalete in the left margin. On a sunny day you can enjoy a magnificent view of the bridge and its surroundings. It is something that is really worth. You can even cross walk on top.

  • Fantastic early 19th century engineering still in use today. Lovely visit for 7 euros you can ride in the gondola and take the lift to the top and walk over. Signs in English give you the history of the bridge. A world heritage site.
  • A beautiful 19 century bridge. Not to miss in a Bilbao visit. Fantastic views from the top. A witness of the Bilbao's industrial XIX&XX century glory.
  • Gran obra d'enginyeria. Visita molt interessant
  • Can really recommend seeing if you are visiting Bilbao. The view is stunning, and if you get a ticket for walking over, you also get to take the gondola back (in short you can pass it both ways). It is worth noting that the information posts along the walkway on the top seem to be ordered chronologically from the Getxo side to the Portugalete side. A good way to get here is to take the metro from Bilbao.
  • There are three ways to enjoy the view, the best one is taking the elevator that costs 7€ or 5€ with a student card, it's a total must to visit if you're at Bilbao and want to know the surround area
