Parque Natural Somiedo, Pola de Somiedo

(4.7/5 based on 80+ reviews on the web)
Somiedo Natural Park is a natural park located in the central area of the Cantabrian Mountains in the Principality of Asturias in northern Spain. It contains 39,164 hectares, corresponding geographically with the municipality of Somiedo, which is completely included in the park, as well as the municipalities of Belmonte and Teverga.Natural MonumentLakes in the park have been designated a natural monument, the Conjunto Lacustre de Somiedo.Human activityThe farming methods traditional to the area are regarded as an example of sustainable living, and were a factor in UNESCO's designation of the park as a Biosphere Reserve in 2000. Of particular interest is the braña, a traditional system of livestock herding based on transhumance, which makes use of high pastures for summer grazing. There is interest in preserving the traditional buildings of the brañas not only for farming purposes but also as a tourist attraction.Somiedo is one of a number of Biosphere Reserves in the Cantabrian mountains. The possibility of managing these reserves together as a "super-reserve" (to be called Gran Cantábrica) is under discussion as at 2009. Integration would benefit the management of some species of wildlife.FaunaCantabrian brown bearThe park is a stronghold of the Cantabrian brown bear. In 2009 the Spanish newspaper El País referred to Somiedo with its 30 bears as the Spanish Yellowstone. The Fundación Oso Pardo (FOP) opened an interpretation centre in October 2011 called “Somiedo y el Oso” in Pola de Somiedo.

  • Asturias is an enigma. The province feels more Celtic than Spanish. It's northern coast is battered by the Atlantic and the great mountain range, the Cordillera Cantábrica rises ruggedly in the south,...  more »
  • Any time of the year is good to visit Somiedo. That Yes, attention to the mists that come up in a few minutes. It is cold in autumn-winter and cool in summer. It has a lot of routes, long, short, easy, more difficult... any one of them is a gift for the senses. From the Lakes of the Lake del Valle, is accessed is from the top of the Farrapona, to the numerous meadows, cruises... Stunning forests, glacial lakes, branes still in use... Without a doubt is worth losing by only Somiedo is a weekend. I visited the area many times and never ceases to amaze me everytime I go, and I don't mind repeat many times that is.

  • The route starts at the top of the Farrapona and in it you're visiting «Saliencia Lakes». You can do the 7 km route or 14, we did the first. There was very little snow that we became very enjoyable and bearable, but at the same time, being December, Lake Cerveriz was frozen by flanges, which gave rise to a spectacular view, was what we liked and called us to attention no doubt. I would recommend who do winter go warm and at least take a scarf or braga, because there are sections in which there are some cold breeze. We saw a lot of people doing the route with pants and snow jacket, hat and walking aid of sticks, we don't need anything like that but I think we had good luck with the day we chose. I recommend this route around the world, I think that you can do with small children and dogs. Put special attention to the ice that accumulates in some areas, because if you lose yourself you can slide you.

  • It is a beautiful area. An excursion can be done from the people of the Valley, near Somiedo, which is about 6 km (12 roundtrip) from the parking area at the end of the village which takes you through the mountains up to a beautiful Lake. You can do with children because the road is wide and easy although it has some important ledges, especially at the end. In total it can take 4 hours walking.

  • Um dos meus parques preferidos em Espanha. As paisagens são magníficas, sobretudo no outono, e a fauna é abundante. Aqui fiz percursos durante muitos anos.
  • One of my favorite spots.

  • A fabulous place. You are in contact with the lush nature of Asturias. And there are places where you can rent horses and take you along little-travelled roads

  • Paraxe de gran riqueza natural e etnográfico. Bosques, glaciares, montañas, lagoas, brañas e cabanas de teito. Fogar de osos e lobos. Impresionante.
