Castillo de Penafiel, Penafiel
(4.1/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
Set atop a large, wooded hill with sweeping views over the Castilian countryside, Castillo de Penafiel is an imposing monument to Spain’s tumultuous military history. Explore the ramparts of this fortress, originally constructed in the early 14th century, along with its inner battlements and keep. Visit the inner sections that date from 1917, which also contain a museum on the winemaking industry in the province. You can join a guided tour on the history of the fortress in the region, although these are offered in Spanish only. The ascent to the entrance of the castle is steep: those with mobility problems should take public transportation or a taxi up the hill. • After a visit to the cellars can get to the Castle from which you can enjoy above all a magnificent view from the terrace.

  • Guided visit of the Castle. Very well explained by the guide that we had. It houses the Wine Museum. Very interesting. Maybe I am not too objective because it is a theme that I like and love. But they are two-storey with panels that touch different aspects of the culture of wine: history, development,...

  • It is not a castle to visit of their own, as they can be other larger, but if in the area is missed. Loved us views as well as explanations of our guide, Marta, which included very interesting historical details.

  • It's a beautiful castle and the location is superb. But here's why we only rate it 1 star. The person at the counter told us in English (!) that the castle can only be visited with a guided tour and that the tour will start in about 20 minutes (so far good). But she told us that her English isn't that good, but OK, our Spanish is much worse (we don't speak Spanish). But as soon are tour started, she didn't explain anything in English. She kept on talking and talking in Spanish, which was great for everybody, except for me and my wife. So be warned...
  • The castle is great and the views from the tower incredibly beautiful, however, the service of the people working there looks like they have not understood that they live from the tourists. They say they close at 8.30pm, however, if you arrive by 8pm they will not let you visit.
  • Super Castle from the outside. Evil inside explained. They should let that people who know its history and Castle inside from small explain it to. The Wine Museum occupies a large part of the courtyard which is not appreciated by the Museum. Refrigerators and well are not open to visitors, this closed with gates. Of the three only plant they teach one. The rest belong to offices of the Museum and office of the director. The Museum if it is worth. All a rock history concerned as well. I recommend going to the plaza del coso. There's only a bar of a wonderful woman we met walking has you Castle stories and anecdotes of the. Super friendly...

  • Very well preserved and interesting your guided visit. I recommend to go early if it is a public holiday since the parking lot is filled with very soon. Spectacular view from above.

  • Perhaps the best is the spectacular image of the Castle at the top of the Hill, coming from the road it is all an appearance. Inside the Castle, striking the curious way to ship with the enormous Tower of homage in the Centre. In one of its wings, it houses the Museum of wine. The explanation of the Guide I liked, although unfortunately there is no capacity limit and was over the amount of people we were. Added as the Museum of wine, seem to me too "artificial", but I guess it is a good source of income.
