Iglesia de San Nicolas, Pamplona
(4.4/5 based on 60+ reviews on the web)
San Nicolás is a historical church in Pamplona, Spain. It was built in the 12th century not only with religious functions, but also as a defensive bastion of the quarter during the strife with the neighbouring ones of St. Saturnino and Navarrería. The military role is evident in the watch tower. In 1222 the original Romanesque church was destroyed by a fire, and was replaced by a new building, consecrated in 1231.The interior is in Gothic style, from different phases. It houses a Baroque organ. Exteriorly, of the Gothic period only two portal are visible today, as well as the apse.

  • before writing our impressions I wanted to read the other published to see if our feelings as well as. Looking at it from the outside and especially when you have the perception that it is a protective structure. In every sense, physical and spiritual. The thick walls, few Windows, accentuate these perceptions. In fact, the Church was built with this intention. A praise to those who conceived the idea of protecting the original floor with a wooden one in numbered panels to facilitate disassembly and subsequent relocation (as in San Saturnino). The sobriety and solidity are the two prevailing architectural elements in a neo-Gothic with Romanesque traces. Among the works preserved, in our opinion, an image of the Virgin and child, polychrome wooden statue, deserves to be well observed together with Christ on the altar, although what is entering right is more appreciated by locals. Also notable is the organ. Manuela and Alessandro Gori

  • Church built in the border of the borough, hence its appearance of a military fortress. The inside of the temple with an austere Gothic, but beautiful in which we can admire the chapel of the Virgen del Pilar and its great baroque organ.
