Catedral de Mallorca, Palma de Mallorca

4.6
Standing proudly in the middle of the city, Catedral de Mallorca is a Gothic building with sandstone walls and flying buttresses that seemingly rise right out of the sea. Dominating over its surroundings, the building is 121 m (397 ft) long and 55 m (180 ft) wide and was constructed on a massive scale. Designed in the Catalan Gothic style, with numerous Northern European elements, the cathedral was begun in 1229 on the site of a pre-existing mosque, but finished only in 1601. Famed architect Antoni Gaudí participated in a renovation project at the beginning of the 20th century. Managing to complete only a few of his grand ideas, Gaudí quarreled with the contractors, then suddenly abandoned the project. Nevertheless, this vast cathedral remains a major architectural landmark well worth visiting. Charm us the aspect that has this building and its location facing the sea. Do not enter, but we enjoy the environment

A visit surely required having to go to Palma's Cathedral that dominates the entire city, from anywhere in the visit. The cost of the visit is to €7, absolutely not in line with the size and organization of the structure. Surely we would not have adequately prepared us, but honestly it was a trip quite disappointing, compared to our expectations.

Very nice place to see. Many tourists, little waiting in lines and 7€ entrance fee. I gave it 4 stars because at the end you walk into tourist shop, that doesn't have nothing to do with catedral. Only souveniers from plastic... Very big and nice from inside and outside.

Palma Cathedral needs to be on your 'must visit' list when you go to Mallorca and Palma. You can enter for €7 each or if you go with an organised tour you may get it a little cheaper. Pre-booked tickets also let you jump the queue. This place is fantastic and the architecture is a pleasure to view at your own leisure. The stained glass windows are gorgeous. Around the outside of the Cathedral you will find art stalls and further afield old lanes to explore and shop.

Where to stay in Palma de Mallorca

To experience the heart of Palma, opt to stay in the the inner ring of La Avinguadas street, where lies the historical city center. The mostly traffic-free district is filled with beautiful island architecture housing boutique hotels, historical restaurants, and lovely plazas, and is only a short walk from the city beach and port. The Santa Catalina neighborhood is another popular option for accommodation as it is well known for its restaurants, daily market, and close proximity to the city's main sites. Just east of the city center is Portixol, a beachside neighborhood that still retains its charm of an old fishing village. For a small town beach atmosphere, stay along Platja de Palma, the beach stretching east of the city center.
