Monte Naranco, Oviedo

4.6
#2 of 24 in Nature in Asturias
Admire truly panoramic vistas of Oviedo, the distant blue mountains, and the coast at Monte Naranco. There's road access to the top, though it also makes a beautiful hike, if you're up to it. The mountain is also home to bike trails used for numerous bike races. On the way up, be sure to stop at the Romanesque shrines, Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo, dating from the heyday of the Kingdom of Asturias. At the top stands a 35 m (114 ft) statue, The Sacred Heart of Jesus, opening his arms to the landcape. The summit also makes a spectacular place to enjoy a picnic, with rustic wood tables perched atop the grass. • I visited with a friend, during the last day of my trip in Asturias. Being quite late at night, there was very little light and so we didn't get to walk around much or even just to reach the peaks of Mount. We, instead, concentrate on the two churches of San Miguel de Lillo and Santa María del Naranco, individual pieces of Romanesque style of the area, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Fun fact: my friend (the place) I revealed that the difficult curve facing the churches is sometimes used by examiners to driving school to test the abilities of those who want to get my license. I don't know why, but I found it an interesting information that comes up and makes it much more "human" this enchanted place.

  • Despite visiting the city on more than 10 occasions this was my first time visiting the monument. As I had a hire car I chose to drive up, almost to the top. The drive wasn't too bad but you need to b...  more »

  • The views are amazing. It is a fair walk from oviedo but not too far. Windy at the top... Be prepared. But ultimately absolutely stunning. The woods on the way up are beautiful too. Lots of little streams. And the churches on route are well kept/restored.
  • Nice view point.
  • Nice view of Oviedo. Great violation of the nature of native, then complain that wild boars go down to the city... as not to adopt the Koala diet not is that going to eat.

  • Monte Naranco mainly presents two monuments, the pre-Romanesque church and the Christ, at the top of the mountain. The car parks are very scarce, and the narrow road. There are a couple of restaurants that take advantage of the spectacular views to attract customers. It's very nice, recommended to upload.

  • The Kingdom of Asturias think in the age of Media Art new and exceptional that we know today as pre-Romanesque Asturian. Center of interpretation of the pre-ROMANESQUE ASTURIAN where replicates this art declared patrimony of the humanity, next to the Santa María de el Naranco, the construction is more emblematic of Asturias. A little further on swe is the Temple of San Miguel de lillo. The road or a path leads to the most high El Pico Paisano, where a large monument of the Sacred Heart keeping the capital of the Principality. From a strategic viewpoint, we contemplate the best panoramic view of Oviedo. To the front of the mountain range of the Aramo and the sacred mountain, where according to the legend he hid the Ark Santa with relics that are exposed in the Cathedral. The view reaches up to Gijón, the Cabo de Peñas to the high peaks of the picos de Europa
