Catedral de Ourense, Ourense
(4.3/5 based on 320+ reviews on the web)
Ourense Cathedral is located in Ourense in northwestern Spain. Dedicated to St Martin, it was founded in 550. The first structure was restored by Alonso el Casto. The present mainly Gothic building was raised with the support of Bishop Lorenzo in 1220. Its local patroness is Saint Euphemia. There is a silver-plated shrine, and others of St Facundus and St Primitivus. The Christ's Chapel was added in 1567 by Bishop San Francisco Triccio. It contains an image of Christ, which was brought in 1330 from a small church on Cape Finisterre. John the Baptist's Chapel was created in 1468 by the Conde de Benavente. The Portal of Paradise is sculptured and enriched with figures of angels and saints, while the antique cloisters were erected in 1204 by Bishop Ederonio. The Capilla de la Maria Madre was restored in 1722, and connected by the cloisters with the cathedral. The eight canons were called Cardenales, as at Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, and they alone did services before the altar; this custom was recognised as "immemorial" by Pope Innocent III, in 1209. The cathedral, which has undergone an impressive transition of architectural styles of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical, was built to a Latin Cross plan. It has been a functional basilica since 1887. The cathedral has a crucifix that is held in great reverence all over Galicia.

  • While it is not visible at 100% from any point of Orense due to its magnitude and houses and old buildings that are almost stuck to it, but a small stroll, you can bask this Cathedral.

  • It is the most unknown Cathedral of Galicia and not embarlo which is home to one of the most important art treasures from the community. The magnificent Portico of paradise, built as a replica of the porch of the glory of maestro Mateo, maintains its spectacular polychrome and is really a visual delight. Recently restored, it is a must-see in the city. In addition, the Cathedral itself, deserves some time to learn it, is not immense but has all the charm of the places that has stalled the time. It is true that they now charge by going to visit it - except in times of worship, which is free access - but it is also true that for years they charge everywhere. Mandatory for all visits.

  • CATHEDRAL OF OURENSE INTERESTING CATHEDRAL the Cathedral of Ourense is called the basílica of San Martino, is a building of estate Romanesque and traces Gothic, and has a good interest historical and architectural. Highlights its Portico of the paradise that is a joint sculpture that represents the arrival of the trial end. Very important your Altar more with an impressive altarpiece of wooden polychrome. It also highlights the lavishly decorated Chapel of Santo Cristo, Gothic image, which according to tradition, grow you hair and beard. Equally it also boasts a veneration of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. There are also various figures of Saints and virgins, very interesting and very well preserved. There is also the treasure of the Cathedral. The entry for them resident is free, but for them visitors of outside costs 5.-€, with different cuts. Winter hours are 11-14.30 and 16 to 18 hours, providing an audio guide free with entrance. The tour usually takes on a few 40´. The pay for entering religious sites always is very controversial and lends itself to discussion, but this is made to finance the costs of conservation and maintenance and is already made in the majority of provinces, with exceptions, logically. The visit to this Cathedral is interesting.
